Ages 3-6. A tiger spies a peacock and wishes that she, too, could be beautifully colored. But when she magically becomes rainbow colored, she loses her camouflage ability. Happily, she returns to her normal state, bringing with her the knowledge that nothing is more important than being oneself. It's hard to feel sympathy for the tiger, whose natural coloring only makes it easier for her to pounce on and eat the deer and boar she meets on her journey. What's more, suggesting that her transformation was "just a dream" is an amateurish tactic. But the message, though heavy-handed, is a good one, and the finely crafted artwork is a pleasure. Loosely executed watercolors in jungle colors (with Popsicle hues on the rainbow tiger) are delightful, and each spread has something interesting to see. A page of tiger facts completes the package.
