Book Description

January 28, 1995
Originally published in 1915, The Rainbow Trail is the sequel to Riders of the Purple Sage (also a Bison Book). At the end of that famous novel, a huge boulder had rolled down to shut off the entrance to Surprise Valley, leaving Lassiter, Jane Withersteen, and little Fay Larkin to a singular fate. Twenty years later a lanky Illinois preacher named John Shefford, disillusioned with the narrow-mindedness of his congregation, appears in Arizona. At a “sealed-wife” village, where Mormons hide the practice of polygamy from the federal government, he picks up the trail of the grown-up Fay. Thus begins an exciting story of captivity, treachery, and last-minute escape.

Critics praised Zane Grey’s trademarks: his depictions of action and his lush descriptions of the Old West. In The Rainbow Trail, the former dentist who became the most popular western writer of all time is under “the spell of the desert.”

4.0 out of 5 stars The Rainbow Trail by Zane Grey, July 27, 2006
This review is from: The Rainbow Trail (The Authorized Edition) (Paperback)
I read "Riders of the Purple Sage" years ago and picked up this book when I noticed that it was the sequel. This is not a fast read...the story does not flow as easily as "Riders of the Purple Sage". The love story is quaint. The story is a bit choppy and takes awhile to get to the main plot. If you have read the pre-quel, and want to find out what happened to Lassiter, Jane, and Fay after being trapped in Surprise Valley, this book will answer all of your questions.

Having spent endless hours hiking in the remote canyons described in this classic novel, I could picture every twist and turn during the frantic chase scenes. Zane Grey's prose is vivid as ever, and his love for this untamed land between Navajo Mountain and the Colorado River, and all around the iconic Rainbow Bridge, shows on every page.
