this 1993 release is the classic lungfish album. if you're not familiar with the band's sound, it's a very cryptic and hypnotic, yet melodic and simple band backing very existential and spiritial poetry sung by the enigmatic poet, daniel higgs.

this album finds them at a crossroads where they combined the raw punk energy of their very early work with simplified hypnotic songs that would come later. songs like 'abraham lincoln', 'mother made me', and 'seek sound shelter' are built around the guitar of asa osbourne ringing out beautiful melodies, and john chriest's pulsating bass. they perfectly compliment the dark, yet spiritual poetry and deeply affecting voice of higgs.

the lyrics here are the most spiritual and cohesive of any of their albums. with higgs singing about god, creation, and nature in a way that is as disturbing as it is comforting. 'the creation story' is simply amazing. a quiet musical backdrop to an epic poem that sounds like the deepest voices of your subconcious speaking to you.

this is punk rock in it's highest state of evolution. as worthy of the acclaim of any of it's dischord records counterparts, i can't fairly describe this album and what it means to me.

I was thinking about creating an iTunes playlist called Lunfish's best. When I do this album will be heavily represented. Aside from Mother Made Me (which is still pretty darn good), I absolutely love every song here.

Instrument hits like a sledgehammer right off the bat, Abraham Lincoln showcases Daniel Higgs wonderful lyrics (and one of Asa Osborne's classic hypnotic guitar lines) and... Well, you could heap superlatives all over this album but it's just easier to say that this is probably Lungfish's strongest album front to back.

Also, this is not out of print anymore. You can get it for a 10-spot on the Dischord website.

Had this one in high school and it always resonated with me. Happy to report it still does.

this band been at it forever and has bored me to no end at times. but the first 3 albums are radio gold...this was the second album to come from this band and there is an explosive energy in some of these songs. this album is full of songs that rock and roll and keep right on rockin and rollin. alot of their formula consists of 2 part songs, song and chorus, that play on for extended periods alowing you to really get into the songs...to kind of trance out in some way. the songs are simplistic in composition and are great in that way...i miss the old lungfish where they werent afraid to make some noise and take no prisoners. one of my favorite concerts of all times was when lungfish toured during this album and performed many of these songs and played with the band candy machine who also were an amazing band...
