Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 The sky is full of signs and wonders, not all of them astronomical; here Gallant stays close to home, surveying the special effects visible in our own atmosphere and slightly beyond: rainbows (single, double, and circular), mirages; auroras; zodiacal lights; eclipses; and less common phenomena (ever heard of Gegenschein? ). Along the way he explains why the sky is blueor white, or redwhy stars twinkle, and why clouds appear to have silver linings. Young researchers who are willing to fiddle will find several hastily-described but simple and inexpensive experiments, as well as advice on observing (safely) and photographing eclipses or star trails. A scattering of serviceable drawings and diagrams clarify descriptions, but subtler optical effects don't come across in the murky black-and-white photographs. This is less detailed than Heuer's Rainbows, Halos and Other Wonders (Dodd, 1978), but covers some different ground (so to speak). John Peters, New York Public Library
