I grew up in the small town of Sallis, Mississippi, and attended Kosciusko High School and Mississippi State University. After graduation I hired on with IBM in Jackson and then took a military leave-of-absence to the Air Force. Stationed in Oklahoma City, I served as a lieutenant and then a captain in the Engineering Support Division at Tinker AFB. While there I met my wife Carolyn--one of my four greatest accomplishments in life. (The other three are our children, Michael, David, and Karen.)
After my stint in the service we returned to Jackson, where I resumed my career with IBM. I spent 30 years with the company, as both a systems engineer and a marketing rep, and traveled a great deal. In fact, all that time alone in hotel rooms and airplanes and airports is probably what started my writing career. I began creating short stories, and a lot of them. In late 1993 Carolyn talked me into submitting a few to editors, and I discovered, to my amazement, that some people actually enjoyed reading what I wrote. Since that time my short stories and fillers have appeared in more than 160 different publications, including The Strand Magazine, Grit, Woman's World, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ellery Queen.
Since my retirement from IBM several years ago, I've been teaching a number of writing courses, both online and in the Community Enrichment Program at nearby Millsaps College, and that's been great fun. I've also completed two screenplays and three novels--but I especially love short stories. In our fast-paced, multi-tasking society, they seem (to me at least) to be the perfect form of entertainment.
