More About the Author

I grew up in the small town of Sallis, Mississippi, and attended Kosciusko High School and Mississippi State University. After graduation I hired on with IBM in Jackson and then took a military leave-of-absence to the Air Force. Stationed in Oklahoma City, I served as a lieutenant and then a captain in the Engineering Support Division at Tinker AFB. While there I met my wife Carolyn--one of my four greatest accomplishments in life. (The other three are our children, Michael, David, and Karen.)

After my stint in the service we returned to Jackson, where I resumed my career with IBM. I spent 30 years with the company, as both a systems engineer and a marketing rep, and traveled a great deal. In fact, all that time alone in hotel rooms and airplanes and airports is probably what started my writing career. I began creating short stories, and a lot of them. In late 1993 Carolyn talked me into submitting a few to editors, and I discovered, to my amazement, that some people actually enjoyed reading what I wrote. Since that time my short stories and fillers have appeared in more than 160 different publications, including The Strand Magazine, Grit, Woman's World, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ellery Queen.

Since my retirement from IBM several years ago, I've been teaching a number of writing courses, both online and in the Community Enrichment Program at nearby Millsaps College, and that's been great fun. I've also completed two screenplays and three novels--but I especially love short stories. In our fast-paced, multi-tasking society, they seem (to me at least) to be the perfect form of entertainment.

John Floyd is a master of the short story. Like any master, he is both specialized and versatile. "Rainbow's End" is a perfect example of his skill at storytelling.

A handsomely bound hard-cover book, "Rainbow's End" is full of satisfying short tales. Some are deadly serious, others are comedy. All have the element of the unexpected in them. Despite being quite familiar with Floyd's breadth of work, several of the stories "got" me with the twist at the end, leaving me with a satisfied grin. Anyone who hasn't read dozens of his tales already will almost surely be "gotten" by every story.

I've always been a fan of the darker tales and there are a few in this collection that I really enjoyed for that reason. But Floyd has sprinkled in whodunits and cozies in equal proportion, so there is something for every type of mystery reader. For instance, the stories include a series of recurring characters (a retired school teacher and a Sheriff) that are hilarious.

The settings for the stories in this collection vary in both time and location, which makes every new story a radically different adventure.

Short story collections generally come in two kinds -- themed collections by different authors and single author collections (like this one). However, "Rainbow's End" has a theme, and it is this: excellent storytelling.

Highly recommended.

A Book Full of Gold January 28, 2007
Format:Hardcover
John M. Floyd writes a great story. This book is full of short stories displaying John M Floyd's ability to take an ordinary idea and turn it into a simple story that packs a wallop at the end. His stories all end in a way the reader least expects them to. He has a flair for realistic dialog, smooth plots, good settings and satisfying endings. Great reading.
