4.0 out of 5 stars The solo debut by Stewart, August 9, 2002
This is an amazing solo debut by Rod Stewart, released in 1969 (in the US, it received the title "The Rod Stewart Album" - go figure why...?).

The band here is tight and focused, Rod sings like never, it blends some very good originals by Rod with some covers. The singing here is full of passion a spontainety, something Rod would come to lose along the way...

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rod the Mod goes solo, August 1, 2001
By Robin Russell (Pembroke, Bermuda) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is Rod Stewart's debut solo album, released in 1969 while he was with the Faces, following his stint with the Jeff Beck Group.

The album features strong Stewart originals and innovative covers in a folk / rock / blues style. There are no weak tracks but Euen McCall's "Dirty Old Town" and Stewart's own "An Old Raincoat ..." are exceptional.

The musicians are excellent and include Ian McLagan (Small Faces; Faces), Ron Wood (Faces; Rolling Stones) and keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson (Nice; Emerson, Lake and Palmer).

This is an important album which combines the vocal prowess Stewart showed in the Beck group with excellent taste, great playing and flourishing creativity. "Raincoat" probably ranks above the better known "Gasoline Alley" as the landmark album of Stewart's early career, before he tuned his sights on the mainstream.

By ynda (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
This is rod at his earliest and best. The music and the writing are really special. Later stuff was rock n roll all the way.....this is great listening with a hint of whats to follow in the faces years.
