A Mother and Son's Journey through Uncharted Waters, February 10, 2009
This review is from: Raindrops on Roman: Overcoming Autism: A Message of Hope (Paperback)
In her book "Raindrops on Roman" Elizabeth Scott gives a message of hope to others as she tells the story of Roman's recovery from autism. Theirs is an amazing story of courage and love.
Elizabeth began to notice warning signs that something was amiss in Roman's development patterns. At seventeen months Roman was diagnosed as having Sensory Process Disorder, a condition of the central nervous system, which left Roman with the inability to interpret sensory information correctly.
Elizabeth describes in detail, in layman's language, the implications of tactile and speech challenges, the therapies, skills, drills, and play times she pursued to change the negative brain patterns to create positive responses. The exercises resulted in the cognitive development processes of remembering, reasoning, understanding, and using good judgment. The skills, supplies, lessons, interventions, and new pediatric guidelines are conveniently included in an invaluable series of appendices.
Another challenge Elizabeth faced was Roman's behavioral patterns. He was often obstinate, belligerent, and confrontational. These outbursts frequently caused "mini meltdowns." These potential outbursts created a sense of anxiety and embarrassment for Elizabeth in situations while shopping, at the park, at the library, or in family celebrations.
Elizabeth attributes Roman's restoration and healing to her willingness to devote her full time to working with Roman on a plan of drills and skills, to the support of her husband, to her personal faith, and to the prayers of her family and friends.
Elizabeth is knowledgeable of the issues surrounding sensory and autistic behavior and is able to clearly articulate and communicate this information. This is a truly remarkable story of a mother's complete dedication and to her son; response to her love and persistence. I not only highly recommend this book to other readers but plan to get copies for family and friends who are faced with special needs children or who have chosen a career in meeting the challenge of working with these families.

Hope and Good Advice, May 9, 2009
This review is from: Raindrops on Roman: Overcoming Autism: A Message of Hope (Paperback)
I read this book after hearing this woman on a radio show. Her book shows that their can be a silver lining. She gives a Christian perspective and example of dealing with a child with autism. I felt like someone understood the isolation, disappointment, and struggle of parents of autistic kids. Her techniques are simple and easy to implement. I like the fact that she's like "here's what has worked for me", not "the only way is this". It has also helped me to be more patient. My sister has read it and I think that it gave her an appreciation as well.
Bottomline: It's worth your money.
