Book Description

6 and upBirds Up Close
There are more than 9,000 different species of birds in the world! Birds Up Close introduces young readers to fascinating bird facts answering questions about the aerial abilities of birds, their magnificent plumage, and astounding hunting prowess. Spectular full-color photos feature intriguing birds that live in forests, deserts, grasslands, and on water. Detailed illustrations help explain the mechanics of flight in a simple, clear way.

The brightly colored hornbill often follows troops of monkeys through the rainforest to eat pieces of fruit dropped by the munching primates. Rainforest Birds explores jungle habitats and the various species of unique birds that live there featuring:
-- birds who live on the forest floor and fly very little
-- birds, such as parrots, whose dazzling markings act as camouflage among the colorful flowers of the understory
-- raptors who hunt for prey in the treetops of the canopy
-- their eating and breeding habits
-- threats from the exotic bird trade and the destruction of the world's rainforests

Review

Birds Up Close is a fascinating series of six books. They help children understand the mechanics of flight and why some birds can't fly -- Sally Bender, Brandon Sun, Dec. 28, 1997 --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Taken from Chapter 5: Sky-high living A few rainforest birds, including birds of prey, toucans, macaws, and some hummingbirds, spend most of their time in the leafy canopy. Almost all birds visit more than one layer of the rainforest, however, and many fly freely between the understory and canopy. Most small birds avoid the top of the canopy, though, because they are hunted by the birds of prey, or raptors, that live there. Larger birds such as macaws and toucans are almost the same size as the raptors and are difficult to kill. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
