Book Description

0786403810 978-0786403813 November 1997
Rainforests-home to more than half of all plant and animal species on earth while covering less than six percent of the world's land area-have intricate ecosystems with multitudes of animal and plant species, including humans. Yet deforestation of the rainforests has greatly increased in the past half century. Ten thousand years ago rainforests covered an estimated 9.5 million square miles, but as millions of trees are lost daily to agricultural and commercial development, scientific studies project the reduction of rainforests to six million square miles by the year 2000 and 3.5 million square miles by 2050.

Numerous scientific, political, conservationist, public-information and other organizations have been formed to address every aspect of rainforests; over 120 worldwide can be found in this directory. Each entry lists the address, phone number, contact person, e-mail or Internet address, (if available), mission statement or goals, publications, and often the group's history and current projects. All listed agencies and organizations readily accept queries for information about rainforests, and most invite participation in their activities and projects.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In addition to the major environmental and rain-forest-specific organizations, this directory includes other governmental, nongovernmental, religious, and educational agencies that have an interest in rain-forest-related issues as part of their missions. Many are in directories such as Encyclopedia of Associations but are not specifically indexed for easy identification as rain-forest advocates.

Basic complete address/telephone/fax information, along with e-mail and Web page addresses, when available, are included. The mission and activities for each of approximately 120 organizations are described. Information quoted from each organization's publication is designated by italics. As with any directory including URLs for Web pages, a number are no longer accurate. WWW search engines will locate the pages of some of these. The Web pages of several of the organizations also include links to other rain-forest groups and Web pages not included in this directory.

There are four documents in appendixes representing studies, acts, and plans to protect rain forests. The 11-page bibliography of books on rain-forest issues is one of the more useful parts of this book. It also includes a list of periodicals that publish rain-forest-related articles. The index is quite complete, with organizations, persons, geographic locations, animals, academic disciplines, issues, and topics included. The table of contents is minimal. It would be useful to browse a list of the organizations in the table of contents, especially because some included are not identifiable as rain-forest advocates by their names.

Libraries with collections of subject-specific directories and those with environmental collections will want to consider this easy-to-use directory.
