The trek takes between four to six days to complete, requires reasonable weather, a strong body, lots of heart, and a willingness to put up with everything the Mountain can throw at you (crossing fifteen active glaciers, crevasses galore, whiteouts, and of course, avalanches). In return, you are rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery in the "lower 48". (Commercial guided trips are now available.)
The guide also tells three adventure stories as it follows three expeditions circumnavigating the Mountain -- 1969 (on foot), 1990 (on skis), and 1997 (on foot). You can follow each group's progress on a day to day basis by reading their daily journal entries, as well as checking their routes on the fifteen color photos that completely encircle the Mountain, plus the daily mileage profiles and, of course, the shaded relief topographic map (85 layers of info). All the information is color coded, by group, for ease in use.
The guide is:
* 40-inches high by 48-inches wide; * printed in six colors; * printed on lightweight, recyclable plastic material that is waterproof and highly tear resistant; and * folds down to 5 x 8-inches.
