4.0 out of 5 stars A futuristic tale with an all too contemporary theme, August 31, 2005
This review is from: Rainscape (Paperback)
Someone is killing miners on the desert world of Exodus and Interplanetary Investigation Bureau agents Dina Marlijn and Jon Rziije have been sent to investigate. Dina has an advantage in their mission that only Jon knows -- she's a telepath with abilities similar to those of the hated Dark Star dens, a telepathic race feared and shunned throughout the Synergy worlds because of their mind-controlling ways. Dina especially despises them because it was a dens who killed her best friend and partner.

As soon as they arrive, Dina begins to experience strange visions and dreams featuring a mysterious, exotic man. When she is attacked and left for dead, Dina is rescued by Rayn DeStar, the leader of the Dailjan, a band of desert misfits. He is also the man from her dreams and a dens. When Jon and Dina's investigation stalls, Dina maneuvers the enigmatic Rayn into helping them and the two form a telepathic "bond." However, Rayn has his own reasons for his actions. As the search for the killer continues, Dina is soon immersed in a web of intrigue where every word or thought is suspect. Can she truly trust her heart or is she a victim of mind control?

Ms. Roycraft has created a universe that comes to vivid life in RAINSCAPE. Featuring a richly detailed alien world and a cast of characters that would have done a Hitchcock movie proud, RAINSCAPE is an addictive, exhilarating ride into a galaxy far, far away!

3.0 out of 5 stars Rainscape, August 18, 2004

No matter how far advanced man becomes nor how far his path takes him, there will still be law enforcement needed and there still will be hatred. These two basic elements shape Dina's life. Even if she was not involved in law enforcement, she would still have to keep her deadly secret; she is a telepath with powers rivaling the hated dens, a race of psi warriors who has been banned from civilization. Only her partner knows this about her, but even he does not know the depth of her hate for the dens. That hate will be put to the test when the two go to Exodus on an investigation and Dina is nearly killed. Her salvation comes from none other than a man she should hate with all her heart, Rayn, a dens warrior. However, she needs him and he needs her help as well. Seeing into one another's minds forges a bond that surpasses the hate and places them in more peril.

*** Set in an exotic locale, this is a lesson in human nature that is subtly told and has much to teach everyone in a world where different often means bad to the ignorant. ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Future Romance with suspense and beautiful imagery, June 5, 2001
This review is from: Rainscape (Paperback)
This book has the combination of romance and suspense, all taking place on another world, that I've always longed for. The imagery is icing on the reading. Jaye Roycraft has written a book I'll keep forever because the characters are alive and have drawn me into their world, making me a part of an exciting who-done-it and a tense but satisfying romance. I only hope a sequel is in the offing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, January 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainscape (Paperback)
I really don't like futuristic/scifi books (the only exception being J.D. Robb's books). I picked this one up(because of the high ratings)and really thought I would not like it. I found to my surprise that I couldn't put it down. The book did not overwhelm you with long strange names and languages so it was an easy read. It kept me turning the pages more to find out what Rayn really wanted from Dina than to find out who had killed the miners. I look forward to a sequel. This is the first book I have read by this author and plan to read her others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for a sequel!, October 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainscape (Paperback)
It's so hard to find a new futuristic romance these days. RAINSCAPE was a pleasant surprise! The blend of futuristic romance, fantasy, and detective novel was just what I like!
I hope the last sentence in the book means there is a sequel to come.
