4.0 out of 5 stars A magical way to introduce poetry to your kids! December 29, 2012
Rainy Day Poems is an adorable collection of poems on many topics, some as short as two verses, and some that span multiple pages. There are silly poems and serious ones and even some with a message (about bullying in school); but what really makes this book come to life are the illustrations.

It appears the author has used software to create his main characters of Sami and Thomas Lamb, as well as their friends, animals and objects in the book. They do not look hand drawn but rather created. The childrens' faces are very expressive, and this really helps get the reader into the spirit of the poem, whether it is happy, sad, scary or mad. While the backgrounds are largely dark (perhaps because the theme of the book is rainy days?), the illustrations are otherwise colorful, crisp and enjoyable.

I was not able to find anything either on this product page or on the author's website regarding the age range to which this book is targeted. This is likely because he didn't want to limit its audience, which I can understand. Many of the poems are written simply enough that I think the preschoolers I read to as a volunteer could enjoy the shorter poems. Occasionally, though, the vocabulary skews older (poetic license, I'm sure). I think that kids from ages 4 or 5 up through grade school would enjoy this book, whether it being read to them by a parent or reading it themselves.

As to the poetry itself, I found most of the poems enjoyable--some even delightful and fanciful. In some cases, though, I found the rhyming or phrasing a bit too forced or awkward, and I felt that some of the poems ended weirdly (i.e., could have used one last stanza to tie the story up more completely). Most kids aren't going to notice this, of course.

Not only is Rainy Day Poems: The Adventures of Sami And Thomas nicely illustrated & full of imaginative, rhyming poems, but there's a little stuffed animal your child can find in each picture. Sometimes the 'stuffie' is tiny & hard to find, other times it's large & easy to spot.

The illustrations are very vibrant on the Kindle Fire HD, but I prefer turning the pages in the 8.5" x 11" paperback. Mainly because the Fire HD separates the illustrations with some of the poetry & the paperback has full page illustrations on each page. (I hope that made sense)

Some of the poems had me smiling, chuckling & remembering my childhood 'adventures'. I could almost smell the farm when I read "The Cow Farm."

Delightfully illustrated with imaginative, rhyming poems that capture a child's perspective of their day to day 'adventures' & discoveries.

I purchased the Kindle version & was provided a paperback copy for an honest, unbiased review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages and wonderful for family time December 27, 2012
This is one of those rare books that will be loved by little kids, parents and big kids. The poems are fun and well written and the illustrations draw you in. I sent a copy to my 4 and 7 year old grandsons and they are enjoying it very much. I also read some of it aloud to a group of 5th and 6th graders. These 10, 11 and 12 year olds enjoyed the poems and the humor very much and bickered over whose turn it was to search for the cat that is hiding on every page. I fully expected my grandsons to enjoy the book (and I've sent a copy to my 2 year old granddaughter as well), but to see 5th and 6th graders not only enjoying the book but actually debating who would "get the next turn" was a real gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids love it! December 20, 2012
By Lorena
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a captivating book. The poems are clever and fun. The art adds depth and continuity to the verse, and makes it feel more like a story than a collection of poems. My oldest daughter is a huge Shel Silverstein fan, so I had high hopes for this book. It delivered. She loves the poems and especially likes that they are accompanied by full size, full color art. Surprisingly, my younger daughter (who usually likes things best if they are pink or feature a princess) loved it as well. She was captured by the need to find the stuffy on every page. On the whole, this is a fantastic addition to our home library and is well suited to any child (or adult) that likes poetry or picture books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Poems for All Seasons December 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Rainy Day Poems is anderful adventure into the lives of two wondrous children which anyone of any age, background, or upbringing can enjoy. You are quickly swept up into the adventure like you are on the road with Bilbo or Frodo Baggins, swept off into the wondrous world of pure imagination. One finishes this volume wanting to reach immediately for the next installment of an epic journey like riding across the South Pacific on the Kon Tiki or trkking the Nile in search of Doctor Livingston. Anyone with an imagination will love going on the adventures of Sami and Thomas Lamb. Everything I've read by Rebecca or James has left me thirsty for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright and Fun January 2, 2013
By Diana
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great introduction to poetry for kids and just plain fun for everyone. The illustrations are cute and bright and the topics for the poems are quite diverse. I especially love the surprise ending to "A Snort and a Snore" and the fun description of a child's afternoon in "An Epic Poem for Kids". I gave this to my grandkids for Christmas and think they will enjoy it tremendously.

Really a great book, but I think it is classified under poetry, not childrens.
