5.0 out of 5 stars What makes great chick-lit?, August 22, 2007
What makes great chick-lit? In my opinion, it's an endearing character with a great sense of humor, or who is just a tad sarcastic, maybe even a bit "snarky," as some would say. And, now that I am growing older, as are some chick-lit (mom-lit) heroines, I look for these same characters plus a toddler or two.

Claire Allan's Rainy Days and Tuesdays has all this and more. I identified with the "chick" of the story, Grace, at every turn. She is a bit plump, a bit snarky, and a bit discontent with life in general. When one of Grace's co-workers suggests that she undergo a make-over for a feature article in the magazine where they are editors, she is horrified at the thought. This, and trouble at home, set the stage for Grace's mini-breakdown and hilarious rise back from the ashes.

I applaud Allan for not only giving readers a humorous look at life as a mom, but also for tackling a topic that many wouldn't even attempt: depression. Grace doesn't realize the support system that she has in her friends and family until she truly needs them. What she comes to understand about her life may just be worth the struggle.

Note: The book isn't available for purchase on Amazon.com yet, but it looks like it may be soon. US readers can purchase a copy at Poolbeg.com :)
