excellent re-creation of the original score,
By A Customer
This review is from: Raise the Titanic - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Although the music on this CD is not the original orchestration, it stays true to movie soundtrack. This version is conducted by Nic Raine and performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic. The "Prelude" seems to run just a bit faster than the movie version. The "Memories of Titanic" track is hauntingly beautiful. Even though John Barry himself did not conduct this version, fans of the movie and the music should thoroughly enjoy it as I did!!

My Favorite John Barry Score,

This review is from: Raise the Titanic - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I still remember the first time I saw RAISE THE TITANIC. What impressed me most about the entire film was its prologue. It was a montage of black & white photographs depicting the construction, the launching and the setting sail of the Titanic on its maiden voyage. The montage was accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful piece of music composed by John Barry. In this short yet effective composition John Barry captured the majesty of the Titanic, the romanticism of the sea and the mystique of Britain's maritime heritage in what I consider to be one of the best pieces of film scoring in motion picture history. John Barry's score seems more inspired by the actual tragedy of the Titanic and the unknown dangers of the cold Atlantic waters. Despite the shortcomings of the film, which I attribute to poor editing and not necessarily the script, John Barry's music remains focused on the ship and the sentimentality its tragedy holds for Richard Jordan and Alec Guinness. Jordan and Guinness seem to be the only two characters worth their weight as human beings in the film. Track 6 `All That's Left' is a haunting and beautiful piece of heartbreaking sentimentality in which Guinness reverently hands over to Jordan the flag he took from the sinking Titanic many years before. I have no complaints about this recording and I enjoy it very much. I think there is very little chance that John Barry will ever conduct a new recording of this score. There is also probably little chance that the original score from the actual film will ever be released. I think that Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic did a splendid job with this recording. Like most of their works, they have to grow on you. However, I believe this to be the finest recording of a score that they have ever issued. I highly recommend that you don't let this one slip away.

Excellent reproduction of the Soundtrack,

I have been looking for a soundtrack album with the music from this film since I first saw it on video back in 1985. I understand that the film itself was a financial disaster, but John Barry's marvellous soundtrack should have been released years ago! Although the discerning ear will pick up a few minor differences between the actual film score and this re-creation, it is still an achievement that someone went through the effort of re-recording and releasing the complete film score! AT LAST!!!

"Complete Score by John Barry...released by Silva Screen",
This review is from: Raise the Titanic - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The complete score ~ "RAISE THE TITANIC"(1980), released by Silva Screen is sent directly from Heaven---recording is very true to the original, yet features of course the stunning surround sound we have come to expect from Silva Screen Records---Finally, Barry's "Titanic" score is here, almost 20 years have gone by...ranked among the top five for collector's as the "most-wanted-on-CD".Believe the original master tapes have been lost---with the City Of Prague Philharmonic and conducted by the composer John Barry... and our favorite John Barry interpreter Nic Raine does a spectacular job reconstructing and orchestrating this classic score...Raine has captured the awe-inspiring spirit and power of Barry's Original Film Score Recording, under the guiding hand of producer James Fitzpatrick. This score by Barry is an epic from the word go---main theme is one that really gets under your skin...as we picture the ship as it first prepares to sail---the last 20 minutes of the film or the last 4 tracks is simply magnificent---themes resurface as the ship heroically sails into New York Harbor---the sounds of all the ships horns blowing perfectly harmonize with Barry's music---this is one of the best scores in Barry's musical career. For the "film-score-buff" enthusiasts, this is one soundtrack that belongs on everyone's shelf---personally satisfied thoroughly with the entire album, know this is quite a statement---but trust me...this is such a deal! Total Time: 50:19 on 16 Tracks ~ Silva Screen Records SSD-1102 ~ (1999)

Haunting,

23 years have I waited for this soundtrack. No, it isn't Barry and those with an educated ear may be able to tell you where the recording differs from the film score. I cannot. Raine felt the haunting texture of the original and conducted the City Of Prague Philharmonic to a timeless recording of timeless music. It is everything I hoped it would be. But none of that is important. What is important is the spirit of the sea and its dreams are intact and on this cd.

Yes, yes, YES! Thank you John for finally putting this soundtrack together. I enjoyed the movie but most of that came from the awesome soundtrack that accompanied it. This is some of John Barry's best work without a doubt.

One of the Best Scores ever Composed,
By
This review is from: Raise the Titanic - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This has got to be one of the best scores ever composed for a motion picture. There is more emotion packed into this score than anything that John Barry has ever composed. Perhaps because the catalyst of the this story was based on a real life tragedy that has taken on legendary proportions I think Barry discarded the script and let the various symbols of that ship and events inspire him. The score never seems to lose sight of the grandeur of the ship, the tragedy and the power of the sea. In a way the score is a melancholy tribute to those through their dearest sacrifices that learn that man can never control nature but instead must learn to respect it. This is Nic Raine's best recording of any John Barry scores that the City of Prague Philharmonic has made thus far. It took many years for this recording to come about but it was well worth the wait. Somehow you just can't help but think that John Barry was really moved by that legendary ship.

A Must for Movie Score Lovers,

This was an answer from God. I searched for this movie score for years, not knowing it had been losted. I finally found a small selection of the piece on another John Barry's CD "Out of Africa, The Classic". Thank God for technology that this score was able to be reproduced. It is indeed a masterpiece and a must have CD for movie score collectors.

The best "Titanic" score is here.,
By Jeffrey Wheeler (Memphis, TN USA) - See all my reviews

Silva Screen's silky re-recording of this much-desired score quickly hits its stride! The complete underscore intersperses Barry's trademark broad thematic lines with appropriately murky tones, Bond-like suspense riffs, mournful strings... and a sea shanty! While it is not an earth-shattering score, there is nothing detrimental to really mention. It is the best "Titanic" score around, and very much deserves this release.
