As a Grandparent of eight grandchildren, I have read Cathi Cohen's book with great interest and have recommended it to the parents of our grandchildren. It is a simple building block approach to acquiring social skills and self confidence in children who are struggling to be accepted and do not know why they they are meeting with failure. It is extremely beneficial to the parents who may be challenged in trying to help their youngsters meet with success. I only wish I had it available when I needed it.

Raise Your Child's Social IQ is a "must have in your back pocket" therapeutic cookbook for working with children presenting with social skill deficits. We use it regularly in our pediatric group psychological practice. You will find the book to be well-organized and logical in its presentation. Importantly, its easy for parents to understand and use along with your child's clinician in developing targeted treatment goals and implementing them in the child's daily life. Our typical approach is for the parents to use one of our copies for their work with the child at home. Together, clinician and parent(s) make a formiable therapeutic team. If you have or treat children with social skill problems and you don't have this book you have missed the boat on an excellent resource.

I am the mother of two very different children. This book contains logical and understandable guidelines that can be used for both of my children. While reading through the examples, I found myself saying "Yes, that's just like my daughter/son" and "that may not work with my daughter but would work with my son". The chapters are well written and easy to understand. Ms. Cohen has combined her experiences as a therapist and the reality of being a mother and placed them in a very valuable tool for parents. As the Practice Administrator for a group of pediatricians, this book is highly recommended to many of our patient's parents whose children are experiencing social skills issues. As one reads the extraordinarily well-conceived anecdotes describing specific problems/circumstances/behaviors, parents have told us that it is validating to them to have someone describe a situation that appears "just like my child" and wonderful to have a "tools book" that enables the parent(s) to proactively work with their child to overcome their child's social "obstacles" with the end result being an increase in self-esteem. The format of the book is very easy to understand and truly illustrates the concept of "building blocks" providing both parent and child with an effective and proactive guide to implementing a program that will assisst a parent in increasing their child's people skills.

Some children perhaps from adhd or other reasons do not seem to notice and/or learn from the subtle and sometimes not so subtle social cues given by others in daily life. If this continues it can often lead to a lonely life without many friendships.

If there's a special child you know and love with difficulties like this, it can be very heartbreaking to see. You know something's wrong but you often don't know the root of the problem and even if you did you can't just tell them what to do and expect lasting results. For me it was very unclear as to what else if anything I might be able to do to help.

Reading this book gave me a new and useful way to look at social skills in children, but it was easy to read and follow. It seems an ideal resource for a parent or grandparent who is willing to roll up their sleeves, learn some new things, and at times work with the child in a variety of interesting, specific, and potentially fun activities.

The lessons start covering more basic social skills and then goes progressively to more complex social skills. It can really help a person clarify the specific areas of difficultie(s) and guide you with clear direction on what you can to do together with the child to make progress in strengthening those weak areas.

Ms. Cohen's book fills a niche- there aren't many clearly written books available that include experiential exercises for parents struggling with this difficult issue. Raise Your Child's Social IQ provides parents with practical tools and provides a means for them to partner with their children. Thank you!

I have been reading this book one chapter per week and talking with my five year old son about the suggestions given. We laugh and make it a fun role playing time. The subject matter is wonderfully on the money and the suggestions for talking or explaining to your child are very enlighting and helpful. A good buy and a really helpful book.

Raise your Child's Social IQ is a great tool for every parent. It details several major social skills that children (and adults) need to master. The author offers examples of how different children handle situations, e.g. one shy child and one aggressive child. Then she provides goals, activities, checklists and more to help your child, no matter his temperment, mature in that particular skill. It is easy to read - no difficult jargon - and is very easy to use. My kids and I actually enjoy working through the activities in the book and I am seeing results.

Excellent book for any parent who wants to help their children develop good, solid social skills. Not only does this help with building self-confidence, but also helping you guide your children to not only being a better friend, but also developing strong friendships, regardless of whether your child is shy or gregarious. Since reading this book and better equipping myself to help my child, I have seen an enormous growth in maturity, better social interaction with other children, adults, authority figures, etc. I have also seen an incredible improvement in my child's self-confidence. The book has excellent summary information which I copied and taped to the bathroom mirror to help my child acquire this important set of skills - a set of skills which will serve anyone well.

This is for parents -- it is basic background parenting information on how to teach your children positive relationship values. It shows parents how to model and train communication skills for their kids. Using reinforcement (working toward a goal) it moves children toward more successful relationships. I liked it.
