Raised Bed Gardening - The 'New' Gardening Revolution!

While the concept of a raised bed garden, or even growing vegetables in containers is nothing new; the fact that it has captured the imagination of city dwellers and country folks alike, certainly seems to be! It is certainly a good community builder, as it makes a good talking point around anyone who is the least bit environmentally aware - or just plain like's gardening!

Why? Well in my mind it's simple really. With all the talk of austerity measures, and 'low carbon footprint' coupled with the growing understanding that it really is better for you, when you eat your own food grown by your own hands; the world's population is slowly awakening to the exciting concept of being self-sufficient whenever possible.

Raised beds have long been used and promoted, by environmentalists and keen gardeners alike; as a way of getting the best production from a small area of ground, whether it be vegetables or fruit - even flowers you intend growing.
This five book bundle on growing vegetables in raised beds and containers, is an ideal introduction to this particular gardening technique. There is even included a quick information guide on 'Ten good reasons for growing vegetables in a raised bed garden' just in case you have any doubts about the efficiency of raised beds.

If you are new to the concept of growing in raised beds, I hope you will be encouraged by these books; and if indeed you are an 'old hand' with regards to this technique, I trust that even you, will find something interesting and worthwhile within these pages.

These five books are very useful if you want to explore and try out raised bed gardening. I have been managing a small backyard garden for a few years and wanted to try out raised beds. This book has been very helpful in not only getting me started, but also maintain my raised beds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making it Easy February 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of the better guides for raised bed gardening. The reasons for raised bed gardening, and the how to build raised bed gardens and maintain them are excellent. The occasional insertion of childhood stories is delightful. The defects come when the author discusses container gardening. James does not clearly state the possible toxic problems with using plastics and recycling old tires as gardening options. There also is little or no mention of seed starting and the overlapping repetition between books is annoying. This would have been better as one well edited book.

It's unfortunate that so many people who get into gardening suddenly think that they (a) are a bonafide, professional authority on the subject, and, (b) worse yet, think they have the good writing skills that are required in order to craft a truly usable book. This is particularly true for many of the gardening books that are being released and sold in e-form only. As a result, this book makes for difficult reading for those of us who appreciate clear, well-written books. Amidst his terrible sentence structure, the author also sprinkles in punctuation randomly, like broadcasting seeds onto soil; it is very poorly written. All of the anecdotal material cannot disguise this fact.

Also, and more importantly, Paris isn't really saying anything new. Everything he writes about has already been covered in the plethora of gardening technique books currently on the market (and many more vintage volumes). Most of his concepts are those of other authors that he's just including in his "collection." If quick-and-dirty is what you're after, this book certainly qualifies. It's long on theory and short on actual technique and necessary details. Do some judicious, exploratory shopping before you buy!
