this book is an archival wonder. the author brings us into intimate contact with the potters of a generation past. production, studio, and industrial potters alike should read and absorb the severe trials these men(and women)had to go through to make a living during a time when living wasn`t gauranteed. details such as kiln construction workshop layout and techniques make this book intresting for anyone involved in the pottery field. give it ten stars!!!

This is an excellent book for students and collectors of Southern pottery. Nancy Sweezy is a potter who apprenticed at Jugtown; her knowledge of the techniques and details of "turning and burning" make "Raised In Clay" a valuable contribution to the literature. This book contains fewer pictures of the pottery itself, and more pictures and descriptions of the potters, their shops, and their equipment and tools. It is illustrated with numerous excellent line drawings in addition to vintage photographs. "Raised In Clay" is a primary resource for anyone wanting to learn about traditional Southern pottery.

For anyone who has any interest in pottery this is a "must read" and this also incudes whoever may have an interest in US History.
