undaunted spirit,

This review is from: Raised in the Shadow: Twenty-five poems (Perfect Paperback)
I found here reflections of a life honestly examined and meditations of an unrelenting spirit. Rosenburg's accessibility cast light into the dark recesses of my own challenges. His poetry helps me sing.

We need more poets like Phillip Rosenberg. His abiltity to open his heart opens the reader's. A great gift or choice for a book club (why wait for Oprah to review it to make your selection.BTW Oprah would love it.)

I received this book as a gift and was pleasantly surprised- the meditations on the daily busyness of life really resonate. I recommend it!

Lyrical, great gift,
This review is from: Raised in the Shadow: Twenty-five poems (Perfect Paperback)
Phillip Rosenberg's poetry reads like a song, you feel it. The emotions expressed aren't cloying or manipulative, they just rise up. Rosenberg's writing feels accessible, you get what he's saying. Evocative and enjoyable, it's a great gift for those already into poetry or as a gentle introduction.

Poems with staying power,

My wife and I trade off reading each other a poem every night before we go to bed. Most books of poetry last awhile and then move to the bookshelf, or to the used book store. "Raised in the Shadow" is right there on the nightstand, even though we've read all the poems to each other a bunch of times. Even though we know what's going to happen, getting there is always a pleasure.

Beautiful and accessible,

I read poetry fairly often but rarely find a poem, let alone a whole collection that speaks so directly to the common challenges and mysteries of life. These poems are well crafted and intelligent and you don't have to strain to connect with them. I especially love "Possum" and "Skydreamer."
If you love the poetry of the every day- or want to introduce poetry to someone who thinks that it's too hard or obtuse or obscure to be meaningful, check out this collection. |
