Book Description

October 1999
Are your children becoming adults, or just adult-aged children? Jim Hancock takes a straight-forward look at the mindset of today's generations and their different life perspectives. He challenges assumptions and creates common ground to allow parents to train their children to accept responsibility and gain an adult perspective on life. RAISING ADULTS includes a thirty day guarantee that parents can change their relationship with their child by doing "nothing"--in other words, by not practicing certain toxic behaviors over thirty days. Jim also addresses ten distinctives he believes ring true for youth in today's culture including a sense of isolation, anger, and hopelessness. As a former youth worker, Hancock writes on a down-to-earth, relational level.

5.0 out of 5 stars I heard the author on the radio..., November 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Raising Adults: Getting Kids Ready for the Real World (Paperback)
I heard the author of this book (Jim Hancock) interviewed on the radio. Much of what he said there is the same as in his book. As a professional educator (I teach high school), I can heartily endorse this book. I would say that it should, however, be read by parents of small children. By high school, it can be too late to implement some of his ideas, although parents of high school students can also benefit from reading this book, because other of his ideas can still be useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Purposeful Parenting, November 27, 2000

This review is from: Raising Adults: Getting Kids Ready for the Real World (Paperback)
As a college chaplain, I have the opportunity to see highly functioning, effective adolescents and young adults. I also happen to see those who are nowhere near ready to deal with the real world. Often it is their family life which has made the difference. This book is one of the best at assisting parents in making their efforts purposeful while encouraging us to ease up on the constant anxiety about doing the "worst wrong thing." As both a parent and a facilitator of parenting workshops, I enthusiastically recommend this book as one of the best resources available.
