About the Author

Gabrielle Douglas is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she made history, becoming the first US gymnast to take home a team and an individual gold medal in the same Olympics. Gabrielle began her training at age six, and became the Virginia State Champion only two years later. When she was fourteen, she left her family in Virginia Beach to train with coach Liang Chow in Des Moines, Iowa. Under Chow’s guidance, and with tremendous faith in God’s plan for her, Gabrielle competed in the Olympic Trials and walked away with the only guaranteed spot on the team. My 8 year old gymnast is loving this book! She loves that it reads almost like a yearbook since it is full of pictures and short chapters. Gabby Douglas is a great role model for younger gymnasts to look up to. I believe it is motivating my daughter to work harder and not give up when she can't quite get something. It has been inspirational for her and she is enjoying updating us on Gabby's life and journey to the Olympics. It is written well for aspiring young girls. Thank you, Gabby!!

I just had the privilege of reading through Raising the Bar with my grade-school aged granddaughter. We loved watching Gabby perform on TV so it was a real treat to read her chatty-style book where we got a sneak peek inside her life.

The book is over-sized so the pictures are large and absolutely beautiful. The story starts at the beginning and introduces the reader to Gabby's family and how she began gymnastics at the age of six. It was inspiring to learn about the sacrifices that not only Gabby made but also what her family did to make sure she could continue.

At the age of fourteen, Gabby left her home and family to train with a new coach. In order to do that she had to live with a new family. I was struck by the honesty of the struggles to make that transition. Moving to a new town and living with people that you don't know took a lot of faith on everyone's part.

This book gave my granddaughter and I the opportunity to discuss what it would be like to leave all that you know to pursue a dream. We talked about how hard that would be and how you would have to rely on God to get you through the tough times. We also talked about what it means to be dedicated and to persevere. Long after we were finished reading the book together, my granddaughter continued to pour over the pictures.

This is a great book about what it means to be a family (both biological and through circumstance). It is also a story of faith and determination. I loved the message that was presented through Gabby's story. We need more role models just like her for our young girls!

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

I looked at the book, she is an inspirational to us all. I cannot do this because I am a little too old for this but I admired this girl, Gabby, just the same..... Just hope she can keep her head on her shoulder, be wise, and still be a good person as she is now...... Hope for the best in her future.....

This book is formatted like a scrap book, with clips of personal letters, Twitter conversations and photos. It's a super easy read, as the text is formatted in large font with lots of photos.

My daughters, ages 3, 7, 10 and 13, all really enjoy this book. The pages are thick and glossy. The photos are high quality and interesting. This is the kind of book that my daughters grab to sit and flip through. It's sprinkled with Godly encouragement from Gabby's life, how she handles the pressure of being an Olympic athlete and even how she chooses her leotards!

I highly recommend this book for any Olympic fans or any young ladies that are looking for positive, Godly role models.

I won this book from Goodreads and quite enjoyed it. This title is for younger readers (ages 8 and up, per the publisher). It gives a brief biography of the Olympic champion, relates how her values formed from the strength of her family and through their faith. Written in a style that will keep speak to a elemnentary/middle schoolers, and filled with gorgeous photos, this book by Gabby Douglas is first rate.
