A biblically based work focusing on the obligation of Christian parents to train their children to serve Christ and reminding us of God's promise that our prayers and efforts will not go unrewarded. Chapters are short and readable. The author spares us cute stories and focuses instead on biblical examples, exhortations and promises. Stresses no-nonsense, disciplined parenting and hierarchical family structure. Prayer, self-sacrifice and diligence are constant refrains. I was particularly encouraged by his explanation why teaching your children to honor others and exhibit proper manners is crucial to their spiritual development. Highly recommended.

I came across this book 19 years and 9 children into my marriage - I wish it had been much sooner. It is not so much a parenting "how-to" as it is a "why-to" book. Through 52 short chapters, Andrew Murray takes you through scripture after scripture, showing the centrality of Christ in the raising of children. I used the book as part of my morning devotion for the last couple of months and was challenged day after day with the awesome responsibility God entrusts to Christian parents. I highly recommend this book.

I would highly reccomend this book to anyone with Children or who may be teaching Children about the Lord. Andrew Murray was the Best teacher of Bibilical teachings yet he was from the 1800's and died in 1907. A very interesting and annointed man.Wonderf

I generally blog about the new books that publishers send me to read. I thought that I would take a break from that today and share a bit of my love of the classics. I love the early writers of the church. I am much more able to find my heart resonating in leather bound 18th century poetry or 19th century missionary writings than in a modern book.

All of that being said, Andrew Murray is one of my favorite authors. He was a missionary from Scotland to South America in the late 18 to early 1900's. My first book to read by him was entitled Humility and Absolute Surrender. I tell everyone that this is the place you should start in discipleship. I say that because I got convicted in the forward. If we can master self and have a proper view of ourselves before God, we can so much more readily master the flesh in other areas of life.

Andrew Murray did not disappoint me in this book either. I have referenced it many times over the past five years. The biblical approach to parenting and the realization of the gravity of our Christian walk before our children in unparalleled. This is not your common trifle about adding Jesus to your parenting or how to use Scripture to get your kids to behave. This is a deep work of the gut wrenching toil that we must go through to parent and lead our children to Christ. This is a call for our own self-control and obedience to Christ. We must be submitted and lead to the throne room of grace. This is a must read for all parents who desire godliness for themselves and their children. No longer sacrifice your children to worldly ambition or social pressure. Let them truly be set apart as a peculiar people.

Being a parent is fun, hard work, wonderful, a big responsibility and many more things! It is the most important job given to a person, and yet the most colossally unprepared for. My mom gave me a book by Andrew Murray called "Raising Your Children For Christ", which has become the hardest book for me to read. Why? He lands the TRUTH ...like well driven nails and it's hard! Though I wish that I could meet him, I would also be quite scared to. (Think "Peter", when Jesus turned to him and said, "Get behind me Satan, for you are not mindful of the things of God." And, aren't we looking forward to meeting Jesus one day?) This book has thusfar well served, more than adequately, to point out to me my selfishness and laziness as a parent and a person - and yet somehow inspires me tremendously (I think that's what TRUTH is intended to do)! Great read! I highly recommend it to all parents (and pastors)!

I've read a number of parenting books, and there are many good ones, but in my opinion, this is probably the best I've read. It's as helpful to a seasoned parent (myself) as it would be to a new parent. Murray gets right to the root of what we need to know--taken from God's Word itself, which makes the message compelling! It would be a great book for a husband and wife to read a chapter each day, as a devotional together. There are even prayers at the end of the chapters which sum up the thoughts from the chapters. This book does more than lay the foundation of why you need to parent for the Lord, it encourages godly habits, self-control, and other traits that are crucial for seeing your children turn out! He also emphasizes the need to truly be trusting the LORD for the miracle of grace in your children's hearts!! Essential!

This is one great book. It explains the importance of being close to God so that our children can see the effects of obedience to God. Too many stories and ideas to share here. Just get the book and read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!
