5.0 out of 5 stars Original, honest and brilliantly practical, December 31, 1999

I am the father of three children, all now in their twenties. Like the majority of parents I could (and can) only do my best. This is the book I needed at the beginning. It is utterly original in providing a much bigger picture for both parents and children. It shows how to practically eliminate the overt and subtle selfishness (on both sides) that in a family is the death of real love. As well as being a practical guide in how to deal with the day to day issues that arise the book also goes into such areas as right authority, justice, integrity and virtue and how these values can be communicated. In this increasingly fast modern world these things are being forgotten and the result, to me, is our often loveless society. The book's honesty is truly expansive and has given me the means, now, to be with and communicate with my sons and daughter in a vital new way. A book that is for the children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical reference to raising children, October 18, 2003
By

This review is from: Raising Children in Love, Justice and Truth (Paperback)
I am not a father, and I've never had to directly assist in raising children (though I am a proud uncle of three nieces and one nephew). However, I did get a great deal out of this book. It made me much more aware of the challenges of raising children and made me appreciate the efforts of my parents more, in spite of the times they got it "wrong". Barry's advice and wisdom covers a range of topics from how to deal with divorce, how to deal with tantrums and tears, educating children, the topic of death, and most importantly of all dealing with a child's emerging sexuality. I'm sure that when I eventually am a father, I'll turn to this book quite often! Barry's main message is that of patience, perseverance, and honesty. As Barry says, you can love a child, but love alone is not enough to raise a child in truth. As with all of Barry's books, his advice is always down to earth and realistic. And what more could a parent or parent-to-be need than a practical reference to raising children?
