Great for my grandchildren,

This was a wonderful and insightful book. It addressed issues that I never thought about when I was a mother. Having read it , I am giving it to my children for my grandchildren. This is a generation that is even more competitive than ours. The pressures are greater and this book offers a perspective that alleviates some of the angst that permeates parents today. It offers great insight for our children bringing up less stressful children.

A child counsellor recommended this book to me for help with my 10 yr old daughter. I found it much better than I'd expected. It was easy to read, easy to follow, using clear examples that were familiar and thus accessible, to do with managing friendships, school and schoolwork, and sports activities, all of which make up the entire world of my daughter. In the two weeks that I've read and applied the advice of this book, I've seen my daughter grow in confidence and healthy self-assurance. Its a must read for all parents.

Taking good risks - that's what Susan Davis and Nancy Elper Wolf persuasively educate parents about, without a hint of pop psychology. This book is the real deal. The authors cite serious studies, yet it's a breeze to read. They recite anecdotes that you can easily relate to. You feel like they're your best friends explaining step-by-step how you can help your kids rise to their potential by learning to take a leap - while incidentally emboldening parents, too. Raising Children Who Soar reaches great heights.

While no child arrives with an instruction manual, this creative book comes pretty close. Nancy Eppler-Wolff and Susan Davis have combined clinical observation, scientific research and anecdotal composites to address the quandries parents face as they navigate the challenging path of child rearing. Their suggestions will prove invaluable to people raising young children, and useful even for interactions in the adult world. The writing style is accessible and clear--an enjoyable read.

A Book That Soars,
By Mom on the Run (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Raising Children Who Soar: A Guide to Healthy Risk-Taking in an Uncertain World (Paperback)
In "Raising Children Who Soar," Susan Davis and Nancy Eppler-Wolff go beyond the one-size-fits all parenting books that make it seem as if raising children is as easy as painting by numbers. Their book is a custom guide to creating your own personal blueprint for helping your individual children to discern between healthy and dangerous risks, and to learn how to incorporate good adventures and risks into their development. Drs. Davis and Eppler-Wolff help parents examine their own histories, motivations, and biases so that they can better help their children to take the risks that are necessary to grow and gain confidence and soar.
Risk has been given a bad rap. Yes, the wrong risk can be horribly damaging, but risk is essential to developing fully. Drs. Davis and Eppler-Wolff combine research and years of clinical work to guide parents in how to teach their children to sidestep bad risks and embrace good ones.

As a former child development educator, mother, grandmother and child advocate, I found Raising Children Who Soar quite special. The book was highly informative, and included a sound variety of parents and children with wonderful opportunities to relate. Drs.' Davis and Eppler-Wolff wrote for lay and professional
readers . They stimulate awareness and open doors for family communication. Their diverse observations and useful tools are a bonus. I am suggesting it to my book group of very bright "grandmothers" |
