Book Description

September 16, 2010
On October 20, 2006, a middle-aged auto mechanic, Jeff Markin, walked into the emergency room at the Palm Beach Gardens Hospital and collapsed from a massive heart attack. Forty minutes later he was declared dead. After filling out his final report, the supervising cardiologist, Dr. Chauncey Crandall, started out of the room. "Before I crossed its threshold, however, I sensed God was telling me to turn around and pray for the patient," Crandall explained.
With that prayer and Dr. Crandall's instruction to give the man what seemed one more useless shock from the defibrillator, Jeff Markin came back to life--and remains alive and well today.
But how did a Yale-educated cardiologist whose Palm Beach practice includes some of the most powerful people in American society, including several billionaires, come to believe in supernatural healing?
The answers to these questions compose a story and a spiritual journey that transformed Chauncey Crandall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miracles for Today? You'd Better Believe It! September 23, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Did miracles of healing end after the early Christian era? Not according to Chauncey W. Crandall M.D., author of "Raising the Dead." A Yale-trained cardiologist, Dr. Crandall cites wonder upon wonder from his own first-hand experience.

Readers will learn about some remarkable answers to prayer, including patients brought back to life after being certifiably dead. "Please suspend judgment until you've heard the whole story. It's not something I could have possibly made up," Crandall says.

It's worth noting that Dr. Crandall is in active medical practice. He does not, like some contemporary "faith healers," scorn medical means to bring about healing. He simply gives patients the best of both worlds--his prayers and his medical knowledge--to bring about healing. He freely admits that not everyone who is prayed for gets healed. Miracles still ultimately depend on the will and intervention of God.

Vital to the book is the saga of Crandall's wife and family, who did not lose their faith in the face of personal tragedy. The author does not try to gloss over their pain with cheerful homilies or clichés. In fact, Dr. Crandall says, he has tried to "keep the `church talk' to a minimum."

I highly recommend "Raising the Dead" for its gritty integrity as well as its faith-building excitement.

P.S.: You might just want to order two copies--one for yourself and one for your pastor.

4.0 out of 5 stars A journey like no other! October 13, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Imagine yourself lying very sick in a hospital bed, your doctor walks in and instead of "How are you feeling?" you hear him ask you "How is your spiritual life?" Doctors are not as concerned about your spiritual well being instead preferring to care for your body.

In Raising the Dead Chauncy W. Crandall, MD explains both are just as important for he believes both illness and disease battles within our bodies are caused not only by the normal everyday wear and tear of living but also by the forces of darkness.

In this book Dr. Crandall will tell you about his own battles with the forces of evil as he fought for the life of his own son. Although he eventually loses this battle he gains a remarkable ability to use God's word as a healing tool.

Whilst some readers might be skeptical, most of us will remember "our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms". (Ephesians 6:12)

Therefore it is not surprising when Dr. Crandall goes on to describe tremendous miracles throughout the world, reminding us that medicine combined with prayers can overcome illness. God is Good, God is Great and it is His ultimate promise we can be healed, we can be saved.

Raising the Dead is not just a collection of stories about miracles, it is the journey of a doctor who no longer keeps his faith and his profession separated.

This is great material to involve the whole family in discussions about illness, life and the power behind prayers. A good addition to your Christian library, this book rates a resounding 4 stars!

2.0 out of 5 stars Charismatic Confusion... November 19, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you're bothered by reviews that are in depth, don't read my review. I've been accused of being a spoiler ;P
There, my disclaimer duty is officially done.

I was disappointed in this book for a couple of reasons. First, I thought the story would include more stories of people who were raised from the dead by the power of God. There are only two instances in the book and they take up a tiny fraction of the story. The majority of the book deals with the dilemma the Crandall family faces as their young son is diagnosed with a deadly cancer. They take him to numerous healing crusades, undergo many experimental treatments and in the end, the boy goes home to be with the Lord.

The main reason I do not recommend this book is because it is steeped in charismatic theology. Having been in a charismatic church for ten years I know exactly what it is about and thank God for bringing me out of it and it's error. Without getting into a theological debate, I'd just like to say that God's people (in the Holy Bible) never ran around barking, or flapping their arms like chicken wings, or laid on the ground convulsing, so why do we call that behavior holy in 2010?. God certainly hasn't changed. This was always and is still always demonic and yes demonic manifestations happen in churches A LOT- especially charismatic churches. The author did lose a lot of credibility with me as soon as he mentioned Benny Hinn. Like another reviewer says, it shows a tremendous lack of spiritual discernment to give any credence to that man's ministry.

Two of the most important prayers in the bible are the Lords Prayer and the prayer prayed by Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. In both prayers the resounding theme is "YOUR will be done Lord...not mine" It's so simple it's painful. It is not God's will for everyone to survive a massive heart attack, or for every child to survive cancer. Only God knows why one person is spared and another is not. That's where the beauty of complete faith in God comes in. Even though we don't always get what we ask for, we trust that God has our back and we rest in the peace of God knowing that whatever happens, all is well in the kingdom of God.

I gave the book two stars mostly because I feel a tremendous sense of compassion and sorrow for the Crandalls for having such difficulty in letting God take their son home and for them being so misguided about how prayer works. Having a child show up with a fatal cancer is the worst possible scenario a parent can face in their life time. The story was very well written and gave much honor to their beloved twin boys. I also admire Dr. Crandall very much for being so willing to share his faith with his patients.
