Book Description

September 14, 2010
Current childrearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in the area of behavior disorders. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence and individuality. Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems and find new ways to support healthy, happy development. Over the past 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers and therapists to help children overcome behavior problems. Based on Joe's experience and the behavior protocols he developed, Raising Lions is an invaluable resource for any parent. For people considering, or already using, medication to correct their child's behavior problems, for parents with young children who want to avoid future problems, and for teachers who deal with growing numbers of willful and disruptive students, Raising Lions will prove to be indispensible.

About the Author

Forty years ago Joe Newman, M.A.O.M., was the "behavior problem" child. When his mother would bring him to the playground the other mothers would gather their children and leave. De?ant, dif?cult to control, physically aggressive and unable to sit still, in 1970 he was diagnosed as A.D.H.D. and put on Ritalin. Today he trains parents, teachers and behavior specialists in the powerful methods he's developed to heal behavior problem children. He lives in Santa Monica, California with his wife Julie and his stepdaughter Joan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! Fantastic Book September 20, 2010
Format:Paperback
What a great book!! I have worked in the field of behavioral disorders for many years and this is by far some of the best literature I have read on the subject. Newman's method are put forth simply and straightforward and yet they unlock the secrets of creating effective behavioral changes in troubled children. Having himself been a child with ADHD, Newman's writing is genuine and heartfelt. He understands both the perspective of the adult (professional and parent) AND the child and uses his unique view to create a method that respects both the child and the adult. While reading you get the sense that this book was written for the right reason, to improve the lives of children. Written with warmth, Newman demonstrates a vast depth of knowledge that comes only from someone who has worked with children for many years.

Raising Lions is a must read for professionals and parents alike. It's not just for parents of "troubled" children, but offers great advice and practical methods for raising any child in today's world. I am recommending if not requiring that all my clients read this book. This book will change and enhance your child's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener for parents and teachers September 21, 2010
Format:Paperback
I found this book fascinating because it clearly explains why so many children today have been diagnosed with "behavior disorders," and how they can be helped without medication.

But it's more than just a thought-provoking social theory--this book lays the groundwork for a proven method of handling "behavior problem" children. The author offers a lot of examples from his own background as "Crisis Joe" that illustrate how he has reversed lifelong problem behaviors in specific kids, without using any pharmaceuticals. While he doesn't completely lay out a plan for how teachers and other who work with kids (including parents!) can copy his methods, he gives enough information that they should understand what's NOT working and make some changes to the status quo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book! August 24, 2011
By Tara
Format:Paperback
A lady I know gave me this book. She has owned her own school for almost 30 years and has a master's degree in early childhood education. Every time there is a child in her school with issues, she hands the parents a copy to read. It's also required reading for her employees. Not only will it help you do the right things with your own children, it will help you recognize and deal with problems that your kids' friends are exhibiting. I have recommended this book to many people that I know and have been thanked profusely. Plus you'll finally understand why we have an epidemic of bullying in public schools and what we can do about it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Credentials please?
Just what exactly are Mr. Neumann's credentials? Is he even a parent? Or just another guy who needs a book to legitimize the fact he thinks he knows more than real educators?
