Gail Bowman is the sort of writer that most all authors could learn from. More important, Gail Bowman is obviously experienced in the craft she writes about and her love of the most cantankerous of farm critters shows through. This is one of the few chatty how-to books that I have found did not waste even a page of type. No matter the topic, it is apparent Ms Bowman has learned from experience and is unafraid to tell us her mistakes as well as her successes. But, she is not preachy and doesn't try to convince us there is only one way. She freely informs us of methods and techniques, and even other breeds, reported to her by other breeders. I had long thought the best way to try and make a living with goats would be as a dairy, but, milking a hundred goats can be mighty tiring for a bare living. Thus, I was considering meat goats after downloading some introductory blurbs published by the Saskatchewan Ag folks. I, however, remained skeptical of meat goats for profit. I was concerned I might be getting into a branch of agriculture for dreamers (the visionary sort, no disrespect meant) but, at age 50, I just don't feel the hankering to blaze any new trails. In other words, I want to let today's youth do the experimenting. I just want to earn money to sock away for my retirement. Well, Ms Bowman has done a great job in showing me that meat goats are not the 21st Century equivalent of ostrich, emu, elk, deer and bison. They are a viable farm product that can produce a reasonable income without having to create a new market or without having to depend on other breeders for one's profit. I nominate Raising Meat Goats For Profit as one of the Best How-To books for the 21st Century! If I were still publishing farm magazines I would definitely be shouting the news to my readers. Raising Meat Goats For Profit is a masterpiece.

This one is a keeper. The book is easy to read and understand. It was a joy to read. I am new to the goat business, but I feel that it will be very helpful when I go to pick out my first meat goat later this month (June 2001). Right now I am building fence with the help of my husband. I have learned how to house them, feed them and care for them. I may be even able to get my first sets of kids sometime in November. :o) Can't wait.

This is the best book that I have found for goat husbandry! The advise is sound, the book is easy to read and it covers most questions about how to raise goats, from how to feed them, breed them and house them to how to raise and sell the kids. Up to date, and enjoyable. A must have for any livestock library!

My husband & I bought this book as a reference a year ago as we were researching on how we could "raise meat goats for profit." The book was very helpful in explaining everything we needed to consider as we began our farm. This book is excellent and I just want to remind folks buying it take Ms. Bowman's advice and do the research into what will work for you in your particular geographical area. Raising meat goats outside of the Southwest seems to be a recent phenomenon and northern regions have different vegetations to consider. If we had not followed that advice, we could have easily over bought hay and supplements if we hadn't had our local extension office come out and analyze our grazing areas and hay fields. This could potentially save you hundreds of dollars. My only criticism of this book is that it does not address miscarriage/aborted pregnancies and how to treat the nanny after.

An excellent introduction to the meat goat world.,
This review is from: Raising Meat Goats for Profit (Paperback)
When Gail Bowman isn't authoring books or magazine articles about goats, she is a full-time goat rancher. Little wonder, then, that her knowledge on the subject is so extensive.
If you are new to the industry, or are considering raising meat goats (whether for profit or not), this book is a must have.

Excellent resource for anyone entering the meat goat endeavor.
We are just getting started, so we bought this book for ourselves and our hired hand. Ms. Bowman gives straight-forward advice and cautions about shortcuts, e.g. fencing. We refer constantly to her experience by keeping the book at our fingertips.

Gail Bowman's book very informative as well as entertaining. As someone who has raised and loved Boer goats for years, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed her book and learned alot that will help us on our small goat farm. I highly recommend Gail's book to anyone who already knows and loves goats or wants to know what goat raising is all about.
