A must-have book!,

Belanger's book covers dairy goat management from the perspective of the small farmer or homesteader. Most issues of dairy goat husbandry and management are well covered, but admittedly the book is missing out on veterinary information.

A great, easy to read book for the beginner,

Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way was the perfect introduction to goat care. The author shares his own personal experiences in raising goats. He covers everything from selecting your goat, kidding and the physiology of goats including the structure of the mammary system. It is easy to access information quickly as a reference, but the book is also enjoyable to read from cover to cover because of the author's humorous and candid style.

Best How To for Goats,
By
This review is from: Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way (A Garden Way publishing classic) (Paperback)
I bought this book back in '70's and found it indispensable. I've raised many goats and run a goat dairy here in Malibu... made tons of cheese and had much pleasure from my animals. I subscribed to Jerry's Magazine Countryside and even had the volumes bound! His book Raising the Homestead Hog is a natural companion to the Goat book. If you are successful with the goats, you'll be wanting the hog to soak up all that whey from making cheese. Then, the first crisp day of fall you can slaughter the hog, render the lard and make cinnamon donuts! There's nothing as rewarding as having everything complete the circle of homestead activities! I love the way he writes.

I bought this book and it helped me a lot!(and continues to help me) I based my presentation of Dairy Goat Mastitis on this book and won a gold medal at County Presentation Day, Regional Presentation Day, and was invited to the State presentation day but were un-able to attend! I love this book and couldn't have goats with out it!

I have read several books on the subject of goats, and this is my least favorite. I prefer to raise animals in a manner that is (reasonably) close to the animal's natural way of life (eg. "yard chickens"). It seems that this book recommends a very unnatural and expensive method of caring for goats. I am not an animal rights activist, I don't have any problem with slaughtering animals for food as an example, but the animals I slaughter will be as well cared for as possible, including having room for exercise, and a chance to eat natural foods (brush, grass, etc.)

Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way,

This is not a book that you need to buy. There are better ones on the market. This writer is hard to follow. He jumps around within a topic. Not all subjects are explained fully. Other books explain everything completely. I think the author just wrote what he wanted to write about goats and not what he needed to write for the reader's learning process.

HI,
WE ALREADY HAVE GOATS AND HAVE FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND ALSO A FEW GOAT BOOKS. NOT ALL THE BOOKS ARE THE SAME WITH DIFFERANT IDEAS SO THIS GIVES US SOME NEW THINGS TO TRY,TEST AND THINK ABOUT. IT IS ALSO HARD TO REMEMBER ALL THE INFO OF THE PAST. THE BOOK ARRIVED FASTER THAN WE THOUGHT AND IN A LIKE NEW LOOK. SOMETHING TO REMEMBER- NOT ALL GOATS ARE THE SAME AND WHAT MIGHT WORK WITH ONE MAY NOT WORK ON ANOTHER SO JUST 1 BOOK MIGHT NOT COVER THE SUBJECT IN HAND. THANK YOU
