Book Description

March 30, 2005
Raising NLD Superstars is essential reading for all those who come in to contact with children with non-verbal learning disorders (NLD). Instead of insisting upon the one size fits all model of intervention, the author focuses on the individual nature of NLD children and offers practical, adaptable advice that will help them find their place both in the family and in wider social groups.
The author shares her experiences of life as the parent of a child with NLD with humanity and humor. She looks not only at day to day practicalities such as making meal times easier for all the family and reaching compromises on inappropriate clothing choices but also at the long-term plan for independence. The book will help parents and carers to support children with NLD to reach their emotional and cognitive potential while taking into account the views and experiences of other family members.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Marcia Rubinstien has written a wonderful, hopeful, informative book about raising children with NLD to discover their competencies and achieve success and satisfaction in their lives. Marcia's realistic insights reflect her experiences both as a mother of a child with NLD and as an educator. Her understanding, warmth, compassion, and sense of humor come across on every page. This is a book that will be read and re-read by parents and professionals alike.' - Robert Brooks, Ph.D., Faculty, Harvard Medical School; author of The Self-Esteem Teacher, and co-author of Raising Resilient Children.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a great book!, March 10, 2006
This review is from: Raising NLD Superstars: What Families with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities Need to Know about Nurturing Confident, Competent Kids (Paperback)
When I discovered my son had NLD, and started reading some of the books out there on this topic, I became very alarmed, because the ones I read indicated that his condition was very serious, and that he might not be able to lead a completely independent life.
Raising NLD Superstars reassured me that is is very possible to have a child who lives an independent and fulfilling adult life - this book relieved my anxiety! There are really good strategies here that help you as a parent cope and help your child. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Informative, and Fun to Read, September 9, 2005
This review is from: Raising NLD Superstars: What Families with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities Need to Know about Nurturing Confident, Competent Kids (Paperback)
This book is not only informative, it's also fun and easy to read. If you have a child with any sort of learning disability, you will instantly identify with the pride and exasperation Marcia Brown Rubenstien portrays, as she takes you through the neuroscience and just about every possible scenario you'll address as a parent of a child with NLD--from home to school to restaurants to medical appointments, etc etc etc. Her descriptions of the children as well as the adults they interact with are on the mark and equally informative, and the key points that end each chapter are useful and, often, priceless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book we can all relate to..., March 20, 2006
This review is from: Raising NLD Superstars: What Families with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities Need to Know about Nurturing Confident, Competent Kids (Paperback)
Finally -- a book my husband and I could relate too. There is a whole chapter designated to "hurrying" and how it is almost impossible to hurry your NLD child. This is one book that really put it all into perspective for us and one I could actually get my husband to read.
