Book Description

May 15, 2000
Parents have the important (and daunting) task of giving their children a spiritual foundation for life. Raising a Spiritual Child: A Jewish Perspective gives parents the tools they need to guide their children along this path to a personal faith. Based on five years of research with hundreds of adults and young people, Dr. Schneider shows parents of preschoolers through teens how to match a child's interests to one of four personal approaches to faith. An easy-to-use questionnaire and numerous examples provide step-by-step guidance to parents, while hundreds of resources give concrete ideas for each age group. Parents get help too---included are tools to help parents fortify their own spirituality, even as they nurture their children's faith.

About the Author

Dr. Stephanie Hubert Schneider has pursued research in the field of religion for over five years, focusing on faith-motivation and its roots in childhood. In her capacity as psychologist she has worked with many families and children, giving numerous seminars on the secular aspects of parenting and discipline. Her background in child development has made her aware of the importance of early input in shaping a child's path--and the vital role parents play in developing their children's faith. Her expertise in child development and her research in faith motivation form the backbone of Raising a Spiritual Child. Dr. Schneider has been teaching courses in Religious Studies and Psychology at the University of California, Irvine for the past ten years. She is a frequent speaker at local religious organizations, and is involved in several interfaith organizations. Holding degrees in Counseling Psychology and Human Development, Dr. Schneider understands the link between human needs and religion. In addition, her active involvement in the local religious community has given her a rich base from which to draw examples and make comparisons. She is a board member and Chair of Religious Services at her synagogue, a Reform congregation in Orange County, California.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resources for Parents, June 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Raising a Spiritual Child: A Jewish Perspective (Paperback)
I don't know of any other books in print with this kind of resource list included. Dr. Schneider has combed the bookstores for ideas to give to other parents. There are also some great suggestions for talking to children about G-d and answering the frustrating questions kids ask about Judaism. Well done!
