5.0 out of 5 stars A Lucky Find, April 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Raising the Stones (Hardcover)
A few years ago I wandered into my local newsagent to buy a paper, and thought I'd check out their bookshelf. A book caught my eye for the simple reason of its having a yellow cover. I picked it up, read the blurb on the back, and figured I may as well buy it. Well, I was hooked within two paragraphs! This book has every thing-- love, hate, gods, monstrous evil, sacrifice, redempton, miracles. Sheri S. Tepper writes a prose so lovely it can make you cry, her characters are 'real' people.... in fact, the only complaint I have is that her books come to an end. But then even the endings are satisfying, so what can I do but go and buy another? Read "Raising The Stones", read anything that has Sheri S. Tepper's name on the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book - one I recommend to friends, April 11, 1999

If you enjoy Sheri Tepper's work, you should love this book. It deals with religion in an educated, yet satirical manner. An excellent read, and quite uplifting. I lend it out so often I live in fear of losing track of my copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catch the Non-Violence Virus, March 30, 1997
By A Customer
How would the world react if it were in danger of losing the will to dominate? Tepper has woven a tale about a universe filled with unfeeling dominators into which an alien lifeform is injected which makes antagonism impossible. Of course, as the lifeform begins to spread, the bosses don't like it. Well-written and suspenseful. This should have become a classic

Intriguing characters set in a complex and varied world, a common problem, a set of unlikely allies who can arouse our empathy. I truly enjoyed reading this Tepper novel, not something I can say for much of her work. I really wanted to turn the pages and I was left wanting more at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genre-spanning post-modern feminist classic!, October 13, 1997

This book is for everyone, not just science fiction fans. From the gentle slopes of a backwater agricultural world to the rocky shores of a decadent male-dominated military civilization, Tepper takes us on a tour de force journey through the human heart and mind. Encompassing the very natures of Love and Hate, the roles of innocence and compassion within society, the depredations of sexism and greed and the last bastion of human salvation, forgiveness, this tale brings us face to face with our own reflections. Tepper deftly weaves the reader's own emotions into her complex yarn, making us hate and making us fall in love; teaching us to forgive but never forget. If you have ever loved at all, if you have ever felt the hardness of hatred and the blessing of forgiveness, then this is the book for you. Here is that rare book that you will treasure forever and compell all of your friends to read as well.

Another world, another culture, and how 'we' subconsciously view the cute little natives and well-meaningly interfere with their 'barbaric' customs. Ms Tepper REALLY makes you reflect on how YOU live, how YOU think and how would YOU fare in a situation like this. Each book is mind-expanding in a different way - how does she do it? More please!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite out of the trilogy, January 3, 2012

I read 'Sideshow' before this, and reading this book actually made some of the things in Sideshow easier to understand. This is my favorite book out of the trilogy, though the trilogy overall is good and I recommend all three books. The premise is very interesting, and it's easy to see that the strictly patriarchal religion of Voorstod is a combination of fundamentalist Christian and Islamic teachings. Not surprising since Ms. Tepper has very strong feminist feelings and this shows up a lot in her work, though she dies have a lot of pertinent messages to share. One of the things I remember from this book that applies to the real world is that while some people are happy to leave a fundamentalist religion if they are shown/taught something better, there are some people who will absolutely refuse to change and actually WANT to discriminate and hate for the sake of feeling powerful/superior. How true that is when I see some of the people in our world!
