Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Powerlessness, divorce, homelessness, and alcoholism are some of the current societal ills addressed in this exciting first collection by a writer previously known for her nonfiction. Adler (creative writing, San Diego State Univ.) takes readers on a journey to find meaning and wholeness. "Gravity Reversed" examines aging: "Black has slipped from her hair/ to pockets under her eyes." The author probes her Jewish roots to reclaim lost voices--"Voices erupted like small gas leaks"--in the process, as the title poem shows, finding her own. Another fine piece, "Telephone to the Dead," concludes that "The only questions that could be transmitted/ were those between the generations/ that had never before been asked." Notable for its strong feminist, intergenerational, personal, and political messages, this is recommended for all poetry collections.

Raising The Tents tracks a woman's retrieval of her voice. In these poems we join a woman on her journey to find meaning and wholeness. Frances Payne Adler's personal mythology evolves from a belief in the possibility for change and a Jewish heritage emphasizing ancestry. She explores the silencing of women and reveals the empowering effects of finding and claiming our voices. In remembering pogroms and the Holocaust, and her childhood in an alcoholic home, she builds connections between the personal and political, bearing witness "against a world malnourished by its insistence on dominance as a way of life". -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This review is from: Raising the Tents (Paperback)
I had the pleasure to have Fran as an creative writing instructor at the University of Wisconsin a few years ago. She was the catalyst for me to find my voice and begin writing poetry. I bought this book a number of years ago, and I have loaned it to many friends. One poem in particular elicits long and sometimes heated disscusions among men and women. The poem is Raising the Tents. In it is the hope that one day men and women will better understand each other by at least trying to learn the language that the other speaks. If you are a woman searching for your own voice, you will enjoy this collection of poetry. T.L.Nielson
