Compilation. O Fole Roncou, Baião De São Sebastião, Cavalo Crioulo, Fogo-Pagou, Sangue De Nordestino, from his prime EMI / Odeon era are here. It's a pretty good comp, and the easiest one to find. There are enough good songs to peak your interest. The rest is a mixed bag. For O Fole Roncou fans, Meus Momentos is the best Luiz Gonzaga compilation.

If you're familiar with Forró then you have no need for this review. But if you somehow just got turned on to Forró music and you're looking for a good place to start--you've found it!The best account I've heard is that Forró is a Brazilian Portuguese word that loosely translates as "PARTY"! And party it does. Luiz Gonzaga is arguably the greatest legend of Forró music, and this disc rocks from beginning to end. I dare anyone to listen to "O Fole Roncou" without being compelled to dance! The only possible alternative I would suggest, for a starting point, is the excellent Forró collection David Byrne put together on his own Luaka Bop label, called "Brazil Classics, Vol. 3: Forro, Etc." That disc is a good sampler of Forró artists, including two Luiz Gonzaga tracks from this album. |
