4.0 out of 5 stars The Joy of Reels, September 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Rake of Reels (Audio CD)
I'm a recent initiate into Irish music, having sort of passed it by as "cheerful" but not substantive, an attitude for which I'm now willing to do penance, after listening to John Nolan in person and on his CD "Rake of Reels". Joyful it is, but also rich, varied, and intense. Nolan's playing rewards close listening. The drive and syncopation catch you off guard. His rendition of Morgan Magan is (forgive the cliche) haunting.
