Fun Book,
This review is from: Rally Cry (The Lost Regiment #1) (Hardcover)
Hello Everyone,
I bought this book about 10 years ago. And I like to so much that I read it at least once a year. It's the story of Civil War union solders transported to a strange planet. It is inhabited by other humans through out history who also been transported to this planet. But they are not alone, creatures also inhabit this planet and they terrorize the humans. Need less to say the Union soldiers don't like this and won't stand for it. This is a well written novel that is fun to read. I hope you get a chance to read it. Thank you for reading and see you around the book store.

Excellent Military SF/Alternate History,

This review is from: Rally Cry (The Lost Regiment #1) (Hardcover)
A Civil War Maine regiment gets transported to another world where humans from many periods of history are living under the domination of Mongol-like alien nomads who regularly eat some of them. Well thought out world and interesting characters combined with excellent military action make this a quick and enjoyable read. Even the aliens are somewhat sympathetic characters, a once star-travelling race who have become totally dependent on the humans not only for food but for manufacture of everything, including their weapons. The advent of humans of modern arms and military discipline breaks their hold over one group of "Russians" and cracks their culture.
Note: The "Destroyermen" series seems to have been heavily influenced by this series, with a modern military unit transported into another world where an alien race is eating its way to domination, and other humans as well as a second friendly alien group are threatened. The similarity even extends to the relationship between the commander of the destroyer and a nurse; in the LR series it is the commander of the regiment and a nurse.

Don't buy this book! The author writes a series of volumes that continue the story/saga but, he never brings the continuing story to a definitive end. In "Down to the Sea", (the last book), Mr. Forstchen ends with a promise to continue the saga but, as of this date...nothing. If I would of knew this, I would of never purchased any of his books.
Be forewarned! Because you will be disappointed and abandoned! |
