This was Max Shulman's first "adult" comedy. Maybe you saw the movie starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Joan Collins?
When the army decides to build a missile base near an upscale Connecticut commuter town passions flare, in and out of the bedroom, and then all hell breaks loose!
This book is absolutely hilarious and may be Shulman's best novel. It skewers the 50's: the Marlon Brando/Elvis worshipping teenagers, and their martini guzzling keep-up-with-the Joneses parents, and barbeques the military-complex too.
The sex may be a little much for young kids, but I loved reading it when I was 14.
A must-read. Part of our cultural heritage!

Max Shulman was a genius at writing very funny books about sex without getting dirty. I loved his Dobie Gillis book, and this one is even better than that. It's a twisted, convoluted plot full of the most illogical coincidences, but it never fails to be fun to read and funny. Shulman's prose is quick and precise. Imagine a more literate but still concise Stephen King minus the monsters. A great book, a fun read and if the dummies in Hollywood would get their thumbs out from where the sun don't shine, we might actually be able to watch the great movie based on this book, too. This book is readily available in both hardback and paperback on eBay.

If you are a middle-aged white man living in NYC or Connecticut, and the year is 1959, you'll likely find this hilarious. As it was, I waited for the book to settle down to follow one (or even two) characters, or give us someone we could root for. All we have are stereotypes.

There are some really nice turns of phrase, but other than that I couldn't understand all the reviews on the book that said this was the funniest novel ever written. (I read it at the recommendation of someone who thought so as well.) Perhaps the movie is better, but the reviews on IMDB don't seem to indicate such.

Meh.
