About the Author

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most popular authors. Born in McMinnville, Oregon, she lived on a farm in Yamhill until she was six and then moved to Portland. After college, as the children's librarian in Yakima, Washington, she was challenged to find stories for non-readers. She wrote her first book, Henry Huggins, inresponse to a boy's question, "Where are the books about kids like us?"

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the Amercan Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature.

Her Dear Mr. Henshaw was awarded the 1984 John Newbery Medal, and both Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. In addition, her books have won more than thirty-five statewide awards based on the votes of her young readers. Her characters, including Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, Otis Spofford, and Beezus and Ramona Quimby, as well as Ribsy, Socks, and Ralph S. Mouse, have delighted children for generations. Mrs. Cleary lives in coastal California.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's about time! October 30, 2001
Format:Paperback
It's about time someone put these books in a box! Beverly Cleary's beloved tales of Ralph the mouse and his motorcycle have been enchanting young readers for a very long time- I first read them 13 years ago.
Cleary has written countless wonderful books for children of all ages, from the numerous Ramona stories to the award-winning Dear Mr. Henshaw. The Mouse and the Motorcyle is aimed at the younger end of her audience, and kids can't help but love Ralph, the spunky little mouse with big dreams, who lives in a hotel and wants nothing more than a chance at riding that red motorcycle, the motorcycle that will lead him into countless adventures with his human friends.
In Runaway Ralph, Ralph's visit to a summer camp turns out not to be at all what he expected. Can he avoid the more unpleasant kids in the cabin, and get back to his hidden motorcycle?
In Ralph S Mouse, Ralph goes to school in a human friend's pocket, unaware of the new adventures in store, that will earn him the name of Ralph S-for-smart Mouse.
These books are a marvellous addition to any child's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventures of Ralph S. Mouse October 6, 2005
Format:Paperback
Our son, just turned 6, has enjoyed all these books. They are great stories for ages 4 & up. Ralph and the humans he finds himself around go through a wide range of emotions and social situations that you just don't find in cookie cutter story books. The illustrations are just B & W 'pencil sketches' but he studies each one in detail. We were all 3 taken with the idea of the mouse cruising around on the toy motorcycle. I think that the author of these books was likely a motorcycle enthusiast herself as she clearly conveys through Ralph, the pride of ownership, the feel & excitement of the ride and the longing for the wind in your whiskers !! I found these while searching for motorcycle related stories for my son when he was just turning 5. They are probably my favorite books in his collection too. These are excellent stories that parents will enjoy as much as kids. I think Runaway Ralph is my favorite. I wish there was more than 3 of these stories - maybe I just haven't found them yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars I remember... November 4, 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this series to read to my after school kids program - they not only listened to the reading, but asked for more! As I read these out loud I again experienced the great story of Ralph, just as I did when I was a child! The kids are now telling me when they check them out of the library for their own reading assignments - how wonderful is that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cute book, challenging for my 7 yr old August 4, 2012
By Helora
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember reading this book when I was a kid so I bought it for my 7 yr old son. There are some very challenging words in here for him. He is at the "normal" reading level for his age. I think it's important for him to understand what he's reading, not just how to pronounce the words correctly. So, although I would recommend it for a 7 yr old, keep in mind it includes challenging words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for three classics! December 24, 2010
By Cellie
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I went to Amazon to purchase just the first in the Ralph Mouse series and couldn't believe my luck to find a boxed set with all three at this incredible price!

I fondly remember reading this series when I was really young, and purchased with the intent to share with my children. My daughter is 4 1/2 and I'm trying to introduce her to books at bedtime that don't necessarily have brightly colored photos on each page, but will keep her attention. This series does just that. She asks questions a few times, which I enjoy because it shows she's paying attention and a few parts are slightly too old for her (for instance, she doesn't quite understand what summer camp or a hotel are), but over all the books are a hit for even her age!

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend these Classic books April 19, 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this set of books for my 2nd grade daughter, as I remember enjoying them as a child, and she loved them. As they are not gender specific, I am hanging onto them for my younger son to read in a couple of years as well. As the reading level is about a 4, they are appropriate for advanced readers as young as 2nd grade and as high as 5th or 6th grade.

4.0 out of 5 stars -As Good As They Ever Were- June 19, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wanted to read these to my little ones at bedtime like my father did for me when I was young. I think I enjoyed them just as much now as I did some 30 years ago. These are truly timeless classics. The quality of this set is okay, and the box is pretty cool. It looks good sitting on the shelf in the playroom. I will be reading these over and over as my kids are already asking, "Hey dad, will you read us Ralph Mouse again?" I'm glad I bought this set.

looking for book series for 3rd grade boy
Hi - my guy also reads a bunch, likes fantasy but it has to be not too scary - he liked the Dragon books by Ruth Stiles Gannet, the Catwings triology by Ursula LeGuin (sort of easier reading but really well written!), The Castle in the Attic - not really a series but there's a sequel - and there... Read more
