4.0 out of 5 stars Better than they give him credit for
I find it funny that I'm compelled to right this review because I was never a big NE fan just a Johnny Gill fan from his roots in DC before he joined NE. (And I'm not defending him because I think he was fine before and after NE and never had to worry about having to take a back seat to the rest of the group.)

I find it funny that I'm compelled to right this review because I was never a big NE fan just a Johnny Gill fan from his roots in DC before he joined NE. (And I'm not defending him because I think he was fine before and after NE and never had to worry about having to take a back seat to the rest of the group.)

Its funny how so many people are dogging this album. It was a very good. Given the fact that he didn't have any of the hype that the others did. (Movies, collaborations, etc.) He played the background when they debuted their's and he paid for in sales and popularity. Its suprising he got the air play he did.

Its a very good album and I've got much play from it. I just get tired of people asking me, "Who is that?" I've used this CD as a staple in several slow jam CDs and tapes and have many requests for copies. I think those who had low ratings for the cuts that didn't get much airplay prove that they let the radio DJs decide what's a good song instead of listening for themselves. (He's got good lyrics as well. i.e. Last Night, Public Figure, Love Takes TIme)

He's got a very smooth and almost sophisticated style that you don't see much of anymore. Along with a very soulful but not overpowering voice. (from his idol MJ) That's why he was the lead of NE. Unfortunately, he went SMOOTH when everybody else was going THUG. (Look at what R. Kelly and K Ci and Jojo did for the image of the once smooth ballad singer. That's why Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Bill Withers, Lou Rawls and Donny Hathaway seem so old school now. But who do the keep trying to pattern themselves after? Think about it.....)

Now, he might be considered Neo-soul or even smooth-jazz. (like Will Downing) Its a shame because I thought this would be the beginning of a very good solo career. But look at what happened to David Peaston.....

Look me up if you want to tal music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ralph Tresvant, November 1, 1998

New Edition member Ralph Tresvant's self-titled debut album is great. It features the hits "Sensitivity," "Do What I Gotta Do," and "Stone Cold Gentleman." Tresvant's smooth soulful vocals are all over this album. Whether you like slow romantic ballads or fast jams, you will love this album. The album also features writers and producers like the hit-making team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Babyface, and L.A. Reid. The best tracks on the CD are "Sensitivity," "Stone Cold Gentleman," "Do What I Gotta Do," "I Love You (Just For You)," and "Alright Now" which was co-written by Michael Jackson. With all this, this album is a must buy!!! Go and check it out now!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentler, kinder, more mature New Edition solo act, February 20, 2004

This review is from: Ralph Tresvant (Audio CD)
This CD was not a ground breaking chart topper. That is probably due to poor promotion. But the CD includes some songs that are noteworthy: Sensitivity, Stone Cold Gentleman, and Do What I Gotta Do.

Let's face it: singers of the age Ralph was when this CD came out are expected to be hyped and loud. In comparison, Ralph was smooth and mature.

It's Tresvant's maturity has stood the test of time. I can listen to this CD 10 years later and appreciate it. I can't say the same material from other post New Edition spin offs (Bobby Brown, BBD).

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want smooth, buy this cd!, January 22, 2001

Ralph Tresvant (lead singer of New Edition) shows he can rule the music charts on his own. This self-titled debut cd showcases all his vocal skills from dance tracks to rapping to great ballads! The first song is "Rated R" which is a great rap that introduces himself to fans and future fans. His second song is the #1 hit single "Sensitivity." The rest of the cd is all good. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also produced the hit single "Do What I Gotta Do." This ballad will break your heart. It sounds so smooth. I could go on but it would take up too much space. The last thing I'll leave you with is that Ralph Tresvant deserves to be heard and supported. Every song on this is great. It was not promoted by MCA as much as it should have been. Don't let his music slip through your fingers! Buy this if you want beautiful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites of all times, February 3, 2001

Ralph Tresvant lead singer of one of the best R&B groups ever struck gold mine with his debut solo.. Every song on this disc is simply great.. You can put this disc and dont have to worry about hittin your skip button on your CD player.. Ralph solo disc isnt a departure from what he was doing with New Edition what the disc is a expension of the New Edition sound .. Working with red hot producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Kyle West responsible for (Al B. Sure hits) .. What these producers delivered to Ralph is some of the best material you will ever hear that is evident on such gems like the now classic first single Sensitivity, Stone Cold Gentlemen, Do What I Gotta Do all produced by the hitmaking Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis..

All these songs are sensational but it doesnt stop there are gems on a fab disc Last Night, Alright Now which was co written by the one and only King Of Pop Michael Jackson this song has Michael Jackson written all over it the song will remind you of such Michael Jackson songs like The Lady Of Life , She's My Love Thang, Rated R .. If you are a New Edition fan and you dont have this in your music collection what are you waiting for ?? Pick this up this belongs in your music collection

4.0 out of 5 stars His Only Success Outside Of New Edition!, July 13, 2004
By
This review is from: Ralph Tresvant (Audio CD)
Ralph Tresvant was great as lead singer of New Edition but on his own his two CD's were probably the weakest. The self-titled debut was definitely the better of the two! "Rated R", "Sensitivity" (both versions), "Do What I Got To Do" and "I Love You" (in my view) were the gems of this CD! Still, I think this was the last gasp of the New Jack Swing movement as it began to wind down at this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitivity, July 17, 2007

Sensitivity is rated 5 stars and is one of the best songs ever made. It is a classic that will not go out of style. The other songs bring the overall rating down to 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut!, January 21, 2006
This review is from: Ralph Tresvant (Audio CD)
The first time I heard Sensitivity was when Ralph Tresvant performed about a minute of it at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards in Sept. 1990 before he reunited with New Edition members. It was so smoothly done and fit with his personality. I Never would I have thought that this same song would later race up the charts to No. 1 in November/December that year. And the album sold over a million copies too! But this is a wonderful first effort, as Ralph sings such nicely done grooves such as Girl I Can't Control It, Love Takes Time (not to be confused with Mariah Carey's song of the same title that year) and its funky groove, the heavy funk of Stone Cold Gentleman and others. Ralph sounds sexy on the lovely ballad Do What I Gotta Do, which has that Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye feel to it. But the high point is Sensitivity, which is cool for a midtempo ballad, but can make you dance like the funkiest new jack swing songs of that period. Tresvant had another hit single in 1992 and an album in 1993. But they never lived up to the success of this first one, a dynamic R&B album that probably set the tone for how R&B male singers made their albums in the '90s.
