This review is from: Ram Mohan Roy: Social, Political and Religious Reform in 19th Century India (Hardcover)
S. Cromwell Crawford has produced a dense review of the life and accomplishments of Ram Mohun Roy, the 18-19th century Hindu reformer of religion, politics, and social customs. Before Gandhi lived and loomed large, Roy was a dominant figure. Roy helped the British to do away with sati (widow burning). He also agitated for greater equality inside and out of the Hindu fold, for women's equality and better treatment, as well as for educational reforms and freedom of the press. Crawford obviously considers him a hero, and has recounted Roy's accomplishments in this compact treatise. This book is not an easy read, as it is full of details and excerpts from historical sources, but it is a fairly thorough introduction to Roy's religious, social, and political reforms.
