Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-After presenting the most basic facts about Islam, Douglass focuses on the celebration, beginning with the new moon of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and continuing through the ensuing feast of Eid al-Fitr. Reeves's abundant, framed illustrations in pastel colors provide detailed windows on the observance and show adults and children in traditional and Western dress, in various settings. An easy-to-read, well-organized introduction.

From Booklist

Gr. 1-3, younger for reading aloud. The Islamic holy month of Ramadan may seem like a tough topic for beginning readers, but this On My Own Holiday Book provides an accessible, uplifting introduction. The text and illustrations both emphasize the global reach of Islam, portraying adults and children of many different backgrounds. During Ramadan, children who attempt the fast (not required for kids) endure the challenges of going without food and water and "trying to be a good person all day" by remembering to share and forgive one another. The attractive colored-pencil illustrations show children at school and at home, and the constant presence of food in the illustrations reminds children that Ramadan is not about starving as much as it is about showing respect to God. The story culminates with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, when Muslim children get presents and sweets. Words like Allah, Qur'an, and iftar are defined in a glossary. John Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good book about Ramamdan!, October 26, 2003
By A Customer
This book contains a lot of good information on Ramamdan for teachers and students. I could read this aloud to older students in elementary school too.

This review is from: Ramadan (On My Own Holidays) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent source of information about Ramadan and Muslims fasting. The writing is appropriate for elementary school students, and at the same time has more information that other books on the same subject. It is also important to note that the information is accurate.
