This is an absolutely dazzling collection of Jean Philippe Rameau's (Opera) Overtures by Les Talens Lyriques, conducted by Christophe Rousset on the L'Oiseau Lyre label.
The overtures themselves are marvelous, wonderfully orchestrated and colorful Baroque period works featuring all sorts of brass, winds, string instruments, and drums. Les Talens Lyriques is a period ensemble formed by harpsichordist/ conductor Christophe Rousset, and is one of the very finest Baroque instrumental period ensembles I've been priviliged to hear. Rousset himself is said to have a reputation for seeking out unusual, neglected repertoire. This is a companion disc to ASIN # B000004CYY of Rameau's Overtures by Les Talens Lyriques, also conducted by Christophe Rousset, that won the Gramophone Award in 1996. Rameau not only was a major Baroque composer, but wrote a book on harmony that established him as a major theorist. Based on this recording, he also was a master of orchestration. This CD is as exciting a discovery as I've had in many a year. There are 17 cuts on this CD. Timing is 69:46. Strongly recommded!! |
