Editorial Reviews

World-renowned big game trapper Harry Stanton (Robert Mitchum) is commissioned by a German zoo to capture The Enchantress; a mythical Malaysian beast purported to be half-tiger/half-leopard, and finds himself teamed with the venerable but aging hunter Otto Abbott (Jack Hawkins) and his seductive young mistress Anna (Elsa Martinelli). Tensions soar when Abbott discovers the younger Stanton has his sights set on Anna and - in a fit of rage and paranoia - goes on a rampage before moving in for the kill. Death is the law of the jungle in this steamy action-adventure, where survival demands keeping your eye on the prize.

Loved it! I'd read my mom's hardback book and loved the movie just as much. This movie is one to relish when adventure, romance and fabulous scenery were all combined. If you enjoy jungle adventures like Mogambo (Clark Gable), White Witch Doctor (Robert Mitchum), Safari (Victor Mature) and even Hatari (John Wayne) then you'll surely enjoy this jungle adventure too. Ah, the classic adventure films of the 50's and 60's...they sure don't make them, with great men, like this anymore.

This is a 1963 adventure film that probably would not be made today. Why? Political Correctness, PETA, the hunting, killing and capturing of exotic wild animals and selling to zoos etc. would have it barred. Unfortunately for me, I love movies of this genre from that time period. I felt this was a pretty good flick. It had an interesting score and musical theme throughout, although a little annoying in the opening title sequence credits. The film's cinematography is well done in beautiful widescreen format and it's in Technicolor. It's supposed to take place in Malaysia, but I read it was actually filmed in Hawaii. Good ship and train scenes as well. My only knock is that the Leopard/Tiger hybrid called the "empress" looks more like a Jaguar with magenta spray paint on his back. Still I liked the movie.

Interesting movie - see other review and google the title - widescreen anamorphic but the disc is faulty in my pioneer player - freezes and locksup frequently - and just in the first 5 minutes.
Budget Pioneer player that is brand new, as is the dvd disc. No apparent disc scratches - funky looking tho, on the recorded side with a shaded ring halfway thru diameter of the disc.
Ok - no more lockups/freezes after the first 15 minutes.

Interesting title about a hunt to trap 2 Malay tiger and a rare hybrid dubbed "the enchantress" threaded with Will she or won't she - Elsa Martinelli - in her 2nd wild kingdom title in 2 years, Hatari being the first a year before - trap Mitchum, the world's greatest trapper - while her husband, Jack Hawkins - world's best hunter, looks on approvingly, or not !

This is a dvr which means you have to hit play or enter after sticking it in. This was my first dvr and I wasn't sure if something was wrong till I tried hitting enter, so I thought I would mention this for anyone else getting their first dvr.
The movie for those who have never seen it is full of lovely scenery. It is a nice miss between an adventure and a love triangle. The hunter and the trapper are secure in their beliefs and stances and the woman simply chooses. Except one doesn't like her choice which makes for an unexpected ending.
In my opinion a classic and one of Robert Mitchum's best movies

An adult romantic triangle while hunting dangerous tigers in the jungle. Who could ask for a more intriguing adventure film. Robert Mitchum did a fine job and while not usually a Jack Hawkins fan was really impressed as his calm and cool character slowly panicked and self destructed at the end (good performance). Entertaining film. Enjoyed Sabu's character also.
