Book Description

RanDumb

The #1 Humor Bestseller, with a foreword by Robbie Williams.

Welcome to La-La Land. Your guide: Irish dreamer, schemer, drinker, thinker, bon viveur, enfant terrible, raconteur and fan of foreign words in italics, Mark Hayes. Strap yourself in for a wild and hilarious ride around America's craziest city with Ireland's craziest writer.

Bored and tired of his successful career back home, Mark Hayes knows there has to be something worth living for. Something more than running a translation business and buying new T-shirts on the internet. Even though they're very nice T-shirts.

His dream: to be a famous actor-slash-writer. His own star on Hollywood Boulevard (between Lionel Ritchie and Dolly Parton would be acceptable). A Beverly Hills mansion with a model in every bedroom. Enough booze to float his luxury yacht on.

Determined to make it happen, Mark leaves behind Ireland's green and pleasant land and moves to LA to chase his dream, to have it all - parties and glamour and girls and fame and the bright, shining lights of Hollywood, the whole world at his feet...

Waking up the first morning on the back seat of a car in a Denny's parking lot, with no idea about how he's actually supposed to make it, Mark realises it might not be quite as easy as he'd first thought.

RanDumb is the hilarious tale of what happens when one charismatic but clueless Irish dreamer refuses to accept his fate and goes on an adventure that would make Indiana Jones feel the need for a bit of a lie down.

With breathtaking swagger Mark Hayes lifts the lid on the real Los Angeles and lives the life... so you don't have to. But be warned: this book might inspire you to change your life too.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I like book, me!
Robbie Williams

RanDumb is an intelligently put-together, often satirical analysis of the times we live in... a thoroughly entertaining read that will make you 'LOL' -laugh out loud - as so many have done on Mark Hayes' blog.
Verbal Magazine

The book is a very easy read and perfect for those of us with busy lifestyles... There is a real Ross O'Carroll-Kelly series feel to this book. Giddy up book number two!

5.0 out of 5 stars RanDumb is pretty RanSmart December 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
Mark Haye's debut novel "RanDumb" tells the story of the author's experiences in LA. It's a well written book that weaves together his accounts of Hollywood nightlife, romantic affairs, sexual encounters, and of course, drinking. Haye's life is full of encounters with various ridiculous and sometimes tragic characters (the lazy-eyed girl haunts me still).

At first I had a hard time with Haye's prose, short fragments of a sentence, rarely a complete thought. But after a few chapters, the incomplete thoughts seemed fitting for the book, where I wonder if any of the actual experiences were well thought out. Regardless, the experiences he writes about are entertaining and sure to make one laugh.

Overall Haye's prose is funny, crude, rude, sometimes shocking, often poignant. Haye's tells it like it is, and I admire that. At times while reading "RanDumb", I found myself often thinking of Charles Bukowski, whom I am deeply fond of. I have come to love Chinaski and his frankness and honesty about life and especially women. Haye's has a similar effect on me, but I'm pretty sure he is much better looking, but still has the same affinity for the crude, the rude, the drunkenness and the undeniable attractiveness and appreciation of all women at a certain point, even if at times through drunken lenses (yes, I'm still thinking of miss lazy-eye).

I recommend "RanDumb" and I look forward to reading more fragments from Haye's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, read on! January 3, 2012
Format:Paperback
I first heard of Mark through Robbie Williams, and as a complete fangirl I had to find out anything I could. What started as me trying to find out more about celebrity lifestyle ended in becoming well and truly drawn in to Mark/Merrick/Omar's stumbles through LA and I was fully engrossed, flying through the book in less than a day. I loved this book, funny, sarcastic, and honest. What more could you ever want? Read on! Duu! #TheBest

5.0 out of 5 stars classic August 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
my brother told me to read this book, so i picked it up at the airport on the way to LA of all places for a holiday. Id finished the book by the time i got there. Just couldn't put it down. Was so funny the author writes like he's one of the lads and after a few drinks finds himself in these bizarre situations. I was literary LOLing on the plane. Also gives a very good European view of Americans, take it from someone who goes there a lot the author has got it spot on the way he describes LA life.

If short funny stories is your thing read this book you won't be disappointed it really is a blast.
