Book Description

Just Pets (Half Pint Edition) August 10, 2000
Through a combination of engaging photographs, short essays and cowboy poetry, Ranch Dog: A Tribute to the Working Dog in the American West celebrates the integrity, personality, love of work and loyalty of the working ranch dog. These working dogs represent many different breeds for cattle, sheep and goat herding, including the Catahoula hound, the Queensland cattle dog (heeler), the border collie, the Australian shepherd, the black mouth cur and, of course, the occasional mongrel. When in their element, doing what they have been bred and trained to do, there are few things that can compare to the sheer joy and amazement one experiences while looking on in disbelief as these tireless dogs round up the herds. Wonderful photographs depict the freedom, landscapes, horses, livestock and riders that share the range, and the adventurous and beautiful lifestyle, that belongs to these unique dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working dogs, September 11, 2000

This review is from: Ranch Dog : A Tribute to the Working Dog in the American West (Just Pets (Half Pint Edition)) (Hardcover)
I enjoyed the book very much. The pictures were outstanding as were the poems and stories. living in the city, as I do, I don't get a chance to view areas as were depicted in Miss Murdocks book and found the combination of text and photos to be very calming and engrossing. I discovered a new interest in the lives of working dogs and their environment. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflecting on Working Dogs, January 15, 2001
By
Kristi Edwards (Prescott, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ranch Dog : A Tribute to the Working Dog in the American West (Just Pets (Half Pint Edition)) (Hardcover)
What a refreshing, unpretentious book sharing the life of the working dogs through poetry, prose, and photography. The poetry Murdock selects to illustrate the lives of working dogs made me laugh--and made me cry. Her snippets of the working dogs life on the ranch are enlightening and poignant. Burgess' photography is a treat to behold. She captures the subject in its environment, alternately funny and heartbreaking, such as the old "retired" dog that was gone when next the author visited. Through the chapters of the book, I traveled all over the Southwest and West meeting remarkable dogs and their owners.

Thank you Marianne and Nancy for this touching reflection on human's best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pays tribute to the working ranch dog, February 3, 2001
This review is from: Ranch Dog : A Tribute to the Working Dog in the American West (Just Pets (Half Pint Edition)) (Hardcover)
Short essays and cowboy poetry pay tribute to the working ranch dog in a title which may prove a cataloging challenge, but an attractive library addition. These dogs represent many breeds and have been trained for ranch work; Ranch Dog supberly celebrates their work.
