Good but not enough suspense,

This review is from: Rancher's Redemption (Silhouette Romantic Suspense) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book turned up in the post one day, with a message telling me it was my free gift. I figure if this free book-giver was willing to pay international postage for me, I'd better read the thing.
It was a good little book. A few typical Harlequin characteristics to it, but overall a solid, well-written story. However, it is marketed as romantic suspense, but for the most part it is straight romance. I was a little disappointed because it wasn't what I expected, but it was still a nice read. I liked both Clay and Tamara. They were childhood sweethearts and just out of childhood by the time they'd married and then divorced to pursue separate dreams. They were believable characters and the conflicts that drove them apart - and then pushed them back together - were realistic. Tamara works in crime scene investigation, and Clay is a rancher - it looked as though it was going to be impossible for their relationship to work out - of course it had to because this is Harlequin. But I liked the way they got back together. The problem I had with the plot was that in a book in the romantic suspense genre you expect one or both of the main characters to be in some sort of danger - hence the `suspense' tag. The case Tamara is working on is just that - a case she is working on. We don't even know exactly what it is until the end - is it robbery or missing persons or murder? It's almost completely irrelevant to the storyline - a storyline that is entirely about an estranged couple healing their relationship and moving on together. The author kept referring to the two main characters as `her ex' and `his ex'. It drove me crazy! And while we're talking about crazy words...I'm aware of what the word `fanny' means in North America, and I see it pop up in so many books (I'm looking at you, Robyn Carr). But American authors should probably be aware that their books are read by people the world over, and the word means something ruder in the rest of the world! Immature readers like me are going to get a fit off the giggles whenever they read a phrase like `the jeans perfectly cupped her fanny' or `her beautiful fanny'. I did enjoy this story and the relationship at the heart of it. It wasn't exactly what it promised to be, and it wasn't anything particularly memorable, but it was a decent read. |
