Editorial Reviews

This is country music.

In a recent commercial-country star s genre-defining song, the act of singing about Jesus, tractors and little towns is portrayed as an unfashionable act that runs counter to the current of societal norms. Rebellion is drinking a cold one, getting a little loud, although it s never mentioned what the country folk are getting loud about. Country music seems to be an increasingly neutered genre, where nothing at all is said, where a hit song that welcomes a world where a black man could become president was seen as a bridge too far by some. Contrast that discomfort with the bravery of an artist like Merle Haggard producing a song like Irma Jackson in the late 1960s. That The Hag is name-checked by so many current country stars as an influence is ironic, given that the bravery exhibited in this one song is greater than the combined bravery of every artist currently on the country chart.

Into this tepid landscape, Jason Boland releases his latest album, Rancho Alto. Even though its songs are not likely to be topping the country charts anytime soon, Jason is adamant that this is country music. It may fit in with some other types of music, like Americana maybe, but I m not ready to give up on the idea that country music can be relevant, says Jason. And country music is what I play. My fans are George Strait fans. They go to the dancehalls to see shows. I know these people. They are more capable of complex thought than the country music industry thinks they are.

Many of the characters that populate Rancho Alto are struggling and reacting to their travails. At heart, this album is about embracing the truths that country music used to tell, but that it can seemingly no longer stomach telling. It used to be that a country artist would sing about the farmer that lost his land; now they glorify the party at the lake. For those of you who love country music, but hate what it's become, Jason Boland will sing you back home.

I've followed Jason & the Stragglers for some time now. Every song they've ever released/sung has been a hit to me. It isn't necessarily that every song they've ever released is great, because even the most popular/famous artist of the day or all time has released a "sub-par" song/album. No, the fact is, they pour their souls into being traditional, but still keep in touch with modern Red Dirt music. Believe me, this genre is gaining age and Boland keeps the old crowd happy while appeasing the newer one. JB & the Stragglers have flown under the Nashville radar all of their musical career and I believe that's fine with them. They know the integrity of their music lies within the realm of the dance halls, smoke filled bars, and college-aged venues around Red Dirt America. I beg you this, listen to every Boland album and you'll see that they have stuck to their roots, unlike EYB with their new age punk-country music bologna. No, JB & the Stragglers know they cannot please every crowd, unlike some Red Dirt counterparts, but they try to please their crowd with the uppermost effort and quality. This album is packed full of tradition Boland tunes with some tracks ranging out and having a different genre feel about them. This may be their best album to date and may their best of all time. You won't be disappointed with these songs. I have yet to find a song that I do not like on the album. Thanks and God bless.

The editorial says it all. Young man, great band, good songwriter, great songs, country instruments fiddles and steel guitars. This all sounds so simple and obvious but it is not. You would think that with all the " country " music available via web etc that the qualities I describe about this album would be there in abundance among new artists. They are not. You tend to get Pop or rock with a country flavour. This album is the real deal , I loved Comal County Blue. This is even better. Hank would love it Jason ....need I say more ? Alan and George once sang that " Murder was committed on Music Row" but Jason you are not one of the victims!

I was late to discover Jason Boland and the Stragglers, but this helped to make up for lost time. Boland's rich voice captures the opening song hauntingly and continues to entrance from there. "Fences" quickly became my favorite, with its beautifully written but sadly honest depiction of the changes that "civilization" made in America. The harmony and musicians round out the sounds that make every cut a keeper. Anyone who likes the tradition that Texas and Oklahoma bring to country music should own this album.
