Better than cheaper version of this atlas,
By
This review is from: Rand McNally 2005 Road Atlas and Travel Guide: United States, Canada, & Mexico (Paperback)
I compared this atlas with the cheaper Rand McNally version (not spiral bound) and feel this is worth the extra money. The paper in this edition is of higher quality. It is whiter and slightly thicker. The maps and pictures are sharper. The cheaper version has a grainier recycled look. Still acceptable if you want to save money. I've bought the cheaper version for years.
There are additional maps at the front of this atlas that aren't in the cheaper version: Western US, Central US, Eastern US, New England, Northeast Corridor. They are a nice addition. I like the Travel Guide section for each state. Two pages of useful information for each state. Lots of nice pictures. For specific attractions, there are map coordinates back to the specific state map. Very helpful. This is a great atlas.

Nice Road Atlas,

This review is from: Rand McNally 2005 Road Atlas and Travel Guide: United States, Canada, & Mexico (Paperback)
This is a nice, spiral-bound road atlas (handles well and lies flat). The book was larger than anticipated (I didn't read the measurements), and won't fit in the glove box, but the size only makes it easier to view the large, clear maps. I'll keep it either under the seat or in the trunk, because I definitely want this atlas with me on-the-road.
The included close-up city maps are handy. The pages about attractions in each individual state are nice, although I would have foregone those in favor of a few more detailed maps (my state was awarded only one page). Still, the travel guide section covers major cities, scenic drives & places to see, heritage, outdoors, and items of interest for each state. There is a one-page mileage chart, and a map showing mileage and driving times across the U.S. Online road construction info and maps are available after registration on the Rand McNally web site. I am pleased with this purchase.

Well done but not as good as in the past,

This review is from: Rand McNally 2006 The Road Atlas & Travel Guide: U.S. / Canada / Mexico (Rand Mcnally Road Atlas and Travel Guide: United States, Canada, Mexico) (Spiral-bound)
This is better than the lower cost Rand McNally Atlas.
What we didn't like is that in prior years, their was more coverage of sites of interest in each state. Now, there are just some suggested regional tours in the front. The book itself is of high quality and easy to read and use.

Well crafted, easy to use and easy to read. This atlas now resides in our car, and we do not travel without it. The familiar problem of trying to unfold, or fold up a road map while travelling is gone forever. The atlas saved our vacation with it's concise maps, and convenient spiral bound pages. Recommended~

Rand McNally 2005 Road Atlas and Travel Guide: United States, Canada, & Mexico,
This review is from: Rand McNally 2005 Road Atlas and Travel Guide: United States, Canada, & Mexico (Paperback)
Excellent, easy to use. I don't have to hold it open to view a page since it can be folded over. Makes it much easier to read while in a vehicle.

This is a great source for maps and attractions for each state. The ring binding makes it easy to turn to the needed page but the gap it creates upsets the flow. It's a high quality reference/map which I find pulling out all the time. Very useful item!

I am an admitted map freak. I find it almost impossible to read a book without looking up a map of where the action is taking place, if I'm unfamiliar with the area. Rand McNally maps are, generally speaking, the best US maps you'll find, rivaled only by those produced by AAA or some local authorities. As the years have gone by, R-N has included more and more information in it's road atlases so, until you're ready to step up to the expensive (but deeply rewarding) world of professional atlases, I'd consider this a must on any bookshelf.

I found one error the first time I opened the book (an incorrect page number in the index), but that's the only one I found on a 2,000 mile road trip. Served us well, was fun to use. It's certainly oversized, but we'll keep it in our car and reference it freqently. Recommended.

This is a road atlas designed for use while actually in a car. The spiral-binding is a must for ease-of-use. And, Rand McNally isn't one of the biggest names in map-making for nothing. An excellent product.

The map section is excellent. I liked more a previous edition that contents only the maps. The tourist information is scarce but since it's added to all states, the atlas becomes too thick and heavy. Is possible, should be sold in two versions, one only with maps and the other with the additional info. Otherwise it was extremely usefull in our trip through the midatlantic states. Inclusion of metro or subway maps will upgrade it.
