Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Rand McNally's standard guide now has direct competition from a virtual clone publication from National Geographic. The scope and layout of both are nearly indistinguishable: individual road maps of each state, with detailed urban maps and insets; Canadian coverage by region, with urban insets; a single national road map of Mexico, with insets; and a small map of Puerto Rico. Each atlas includes a travel time map, mileage chart, and index of counties, cities, and towns after the maps. Rand McNally features a special two-page section called "America's Love Affair with the Road," with automotive facts and figures from the 1870s to the present, as well as clip-out coupons for free travel brochures and vacation guides. Both atlases refer to their respective publisher's web site for additional information: www.randmcnally.com and www.ngroads.com. The National Geographic maps are more colorful and depict more detailed topography, but roadways are equally legible and clearly marked in both publications. With so many similarities, either road atlas would be a perfect reference source or highway companion, and both are recommended. However, because the only major difference is price, the Rand McNally atlas is clearly the better value for the money.?Edward K. Werner, St. Lucie Cty. Lib. System, Ft. Pierce, Fla.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rand McNally 00 Road Atlas : Deluxe Edition, April 3, 2000
By A Customer
I found this atlas to be extremely helpful. The maps and index are easy to follow. The maps are up to date, including new roads and highways that have been renamed

3.0 out of 5 stars Too big!, February 4, 2000
By A Customer
This atlas is just too big and unwieldy. I can't figure out where to put it in my little Mazda. Right now, it's taking up a whole passenger space in the back seat.

I love maps. I love maps, and I love travelling, and these dual interests brought me to this.
Rand McNally.
1998.
Yeah!
Seven years have gone by since this map was current, yet I can't bring myself to get a new one. When I was nineteen years old I was living in Alaska, and someone gave this to me when I was about to begin a lengthy hitchhike all over that state and then down through Canada and into the Lower Forty-eight.
I've sat with this book on windy corners in Alaskan autumns, shivering, hoping to move the nearest town closer to me with my mind on the page.
I've felt despair as I looked at the map of Canada and saw how far I still had to travel.
I've followed its directions to as far north as the roads would go (Inuvik, in the Northwest Territories), followed it East, and back West, and all around. I've annotated it with hippy scrawls, highlighted a thousand routes both taken and planned, and folded it in half to tuck it into my backpack more times than I could ever count.
I've used it for years, alone, with friends, with my wife, and I'll use it again. I highly recommend this--it's easy to use, complete enough, and priceless to me--though I hate that Alaska's a bigger state yet gets the same amount of space as Rhode Island.
