Great Atlas, as usual,
By
This review is from: Rand McNally 2006 U.S. Canada Mexico Road Atlas: Vinyl Covered (Rand Mcnally Road Atlas: United States/Canada/Mexico (Vinyl Covered Edition)) (Paperback)
I have been a loyal user of Rand-McNally Road Atlases for more than 20 years. They are light-weight, sturdy, well designed, comprehensive, (and most importantly),they have great maps that are ACCURATE and UP TO DATE!
The 2006 edition is no different, except that it comes with a strong vinyl cover (which also doubles as a handy file pouch for brochures, receipts, tickets, etc.) and a newly formatted index of cities, counties and states, with up-to-date population estimates, and easily understood indices. The choice of lavender and purple highlights and overtones for the index can make reading the small font sizes a little tricky (especially if you suffer from "old eyes", as I do). But this is a trivial complaint; by and large, the 2006 Rand-McNally Road Atlas is the best deal you will find. If you buy it, you won't be sorry. Roger Surbaugh

The vinyl covering is a removable piece, like a book's dust jacket. Doesn't look like it'll come off on it's own though (the pockets are very deep). You could probably store direction printouts in those pockets, or other paperwork you might want to keep with a map. It is quite large, which makes it easier to read.

Rand McNally receives a thumbs up,

This review is from: Rand McNally the Road Atlas 2005 (US/Canada/Mexico (Vinyl Covered Edition)) (Map)
I bought this atlas for my boss who is on the road a lot. This atlas is accurate, detailed, and the words are ledgable.
The vinyl cover is nice for protecting the pages.

I have been buying and using the Rand McNally road atlas for decades; a new one every several years. This one is the best ever. It is easy to use and (as far as I know) accurate. The maps and the printing on the maps are easy to read and it is very easy to find a specific location you are looking for in the index then find it on the map. The milage charts are easy to use and the travel time estimator is an added plus.

I recently took a trip from Las Vegas up the Pacific Coast highway to Seattle and back through Portland, Boise, and Salt Lake. This Atlas allowed me to navigate very easily through all of the states including some areas I had previously mapped out but had to change routes because of winter storms and such. Traveling from Seattle towards Spokane the I90 was closed because of an avalanche at the snoqualmie pass so I needed to head further south to make my way East. Anyway I originally had planned to travel down near Mt. Ranier and through a couple mountain passes. The Atlas clearly marked that certain passes were closed during winter which saved me a bunch of driving time rather than having to find out the hard way myself.
This Atlas is a must have for anyone driving through the US. It will easily allow you to map routes as well as alternate routes which I used different color highlighters to show on the various pages. The Atlas includes a double page of the entire US so you can get a feel of the major Interstates and then drill down into the state pages to obtain more detail about your routes. Another great feature is that the larger states have numerous pages dedicated to them so a bunch of roads are not all crammed together on one page. The plastic cover is a great feature as well and saved the Atlas from getting ruined from snow along the way.

Solid Road Atlas,
By
This review is from: Rand McNally Road Atlas (Rand McNally Road Atlas: United States/Canada/Mexico) (Paperback)
Rand McNally is a consistantly good road atlas. The 2006 issue was very helpful in planning my recent trip. It doesn't replace the on-line maps or city atlases that show every street, turn, and such, but when you run into a temporary interstate closure, it answers the question of what is my best option now.

Ever since my first trip to NYC in 1989, I have relied on having a -no more than 2-3 years old- copy of Rand McNally in our rented car.
Visiting USA and/or Canada every,2-3 years, as a tourist, it has proven invaluable. My wife and I like to get out on our own. Relying on information from the local people we meet. It be family, friends or the waitress at the local diner. That way we've had many pleasant and -often- unexpected experiences. I'm pretty good at finding my way around. And with this map to guide me, I've not yet been totally lost. It be, driving along the vast north-eastern highway-system, or out on the small British Coloumbian backroads. I recommend this for everyone planning a trip to America. Buy it at home. And use it for planning -and dreaming. Besides the maps there's also a lot of useful information regarding general traffic rules. Invaluable stuff to a foreigner used to european traffic.

GREAT Atlas,

I have always been a lover of maps. When going on a trip this holiday season, I realized our Atlas was really out of date, and so I added this to my shopping cart with other travel necessities. I'm very glad I did - it was very helpful. I especially appreciated the many detailed sections of areas - Southern California particularly had a lot of details you just can't make out from the overall california map.
Very good quality and IMO, a good value. I won't wait 10 years before getting a new atlas this time around, but this didn't break the budget enough that I should have to!

We had "lost" our Atlas and were then lost without. It is a frequent reference book for our family. This is excellent and has a wide range of reference areas. We like the vinyl cover for the protection of the book. An excellent buy.
