Two primary strengths highlight this new edition: superior graphic design with entry words in large boldface and the inclusion of over 50,000 new words. A major effort has been made to address current usage with the inclusion of recent scientific, social, and political definitions, e.g., mouse as a computer device and contra as a counterrevolutionary. The over 315,000 entries include names, book titles, and places; 12 supplements include four 30,000-word bilingual dictionaries and an atlas. This is not a replacement for Webster's Third New International Dictionary , which is much less encyclopedic and contains over 450,000 entries. Best dictionary I have ever used...too bad it's out of print.,

The absolutely best thing about this dictionary is the clarity of its definitions...there is seldom, if ever, a need to look up another word in order to understand the original definition. The next best thing is its encyclopedic qualities...names and places also at your fingertips. I wish the binding boards and cloth were as durable as the first edition. I have never minded bringing out this unabridged dictionary just to look up one word because it has never let me down, even with a Scrabble challenge. Too bad it has been allowed to go out of print. I will add that Bowker rated this dictionary highly in their Buying Guide to General Reference Books for Adults.

This is THE dictionary I grew up with and learned American English; it was always on the back of my mind that I would like to use the Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged Edition again. I did not know that it was out of print now.
I read a wonderful review of this dictionary on Amazon site, and I ordered one. I'd like to thank the Amazon people, the reviewer, and the company who handled my order. I missed my First Edition I bought and used in Japan, but I am moving on with my delightful, old friend in a different cover. This dictionary is not only useful for the English as the Second Language person but also for general readers. Do you read? Do you read dictionaries? If so, this one is for you.
