5.0 out of 5 stars the random house book of fairy tales
From 35 year old mom of 6: I have read from many different fairy tale books over the years and this one is still my favorite. The reasons it is my favorite fairy tale book are: 1. It contains 19 of my favorite stories 2. Amy Ehrlich who wrote the stories, consulted several different versions, and retold them in their full splendor without dumbing the text down. 3. On...

3.0 out of 5 stars good stories but pictures can be a little scary
This is a great collection of stories, but when I was a little girl I was very scared of some of the drawings of the villians. So, the illustrations are excellent but a very young child might find them a little...intense. Nevertheless, I still liked the book and read it often.

It contains 19 of my favorite stories 2. Amy Ehrlich who wrote the stories, consulted several different versions, and retold them in their full splendor without dumbing the text down. 3. On every two page spread is a large detailed illustration by Diane Goode emmanating much warmth and charm.

Although the text is not dumbed down, this book still appeals to the 4-8 year old range because of the large picture to text ratio.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short but Not Sweet, November 16, 2008
This review is from: The Random House Book of Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
I recently purchased the book "The Random House Book of Fairy Tales", thinking that it would be a good representation of some of the most famous fairy tales in history. While the selection of tales was very impressive (and the reason why I felt comfortable buying this book) I was very dissappointed by how the stories were edited. I felt that the endings came abruptly and that parts of the body of the stories were trunkated and at times disconnected.

I would recommend searching further if you want to find a more throrough representation of these selections.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of tales., February 14, 2002
This review is from: The Random House Book of Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
This is a great book for any parent. It encompasses 19 of the best known fairy tales that have been told to children for generations.

Included in the book are tales such as Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and The Princess and the Pea.

Each story is illustrated nicely giving your children the images they want to accompany the store.

Overall I found this to be a well made book that can be passed down from one generation to the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what we were looking for!, October 23, 2009

We've been thumbing through fairy tale collections in bookstores and reading reviews online. We were looking for a collection of classic fairy tales that our homeschooled Kindergartener should be familiar with. We found just that in this book. The illustrations are beautiful, the stories are all well-known and the versions chosen are perfect. We read one fairy tale on Monday, review and do an activity on Wednesday and watch the story on Fairy Tale Theatre DVDs on Friday. He loves this routine and looks forward to a new story each week. Highly recommend this specific collection for your child's library!

4.0 out of 5 stars Daughters Kindergarten Language Arts, October 7, 2009

This review is from: The Random House Book of Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
This book is one of the cornerstones of my daughter's online based Kindergarten Language Arts course. She is now 6 years old and has had the book since last February.

I think the vocabulary in this book is more suited for 2nd graders and my daughter gets frustrated with how drawn out some of the stories are. The illustrations can be a bit much but so far she has not complained about them. She's not the type to get scared easily but I can see how some kids might get a little frightened.

It is a very nice book from an adult perspective. I am purchasing a copy to keep for when she has to turn this school book in. I have noticed as she has gotten older she is getting better with this book. At first she used to try to hide the book and would moan and complain the entire time I read it. To say she hated it would be an understatement!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Treasured Anthology, January 2, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Random House Book of Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
The Random House book of Fairy Tales is a wonderful find for any parent. Compiled in it are nineteen well-known tales which have delighted the imaginations of generations of children; Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and The Princess and the Pea are all among the enchanting stories in this collection. Each story is brought to life with several illustrations, some black and white and others in color. Though the writing and illustrating seem a little amateur, they are well-suited for children, and should inspire many happy hours of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairy Tale Book Response, January 15, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Random House Book of Fairy Tales (Hardcover)
In the book The Random House book of Fairy Tales by alot of authors is the best fairy tale book that I have read in the world. The best Fairy tale in the book is The Emperer's new clothes. I picked this story because I thought that it was funny because the tailors played a trick on him and left him naked and the peasents thought it was the new fab. I reccomend this book to all the kids.
